I was living in Redondo Beach during the Northridge quake and was awakened with that horrible movement and all I really remember about it was the sound of a power line arcing near my apartment (a loud cracking noise) and the other sound of everything in my shower crashing and echoing in the bathroom.

“Can aftershocks be stronger?”

-

Yup...

Except then they’re not aftershocks.

Otherwise yes.

Can aftershocks be stronger?

If the aftershock is stronger then technically this quake would become a foreshock and the aftershock the mainshock.

Yes, it's possible this is a foreshock to a larger quake. It's far more likely it isn't. Unfortunately, you can't tell which is true beforehand.

The ground has been moving quite a bit after the initial shock. Got those weird queasy on a boat feelings. Fairly calm now.
