I loved her (as Yzma) in the “The Emperor’s New Groove.”

"was she black listed in the entertainment biz for a bit? I seem to remember hearing about that sometime long ago."

Yes, she was blacklisted by that paragon of evil, George Dubya Bu...

...Um...

Actually, she was blacklisted by that avatar of the Leftist virtue, LBJ, for making an anti-Vietnam remark. Now, show me one performer, just one, against whom GWB acted despite all the mud slung at him and his use of military power. Just one.

Actually, I surprised even colored folks could get away with the sex kittenish shtick she was pulling, back in the day.

I'm surprised that people of today can get away with the "colored folks" shtick.

I recall reading about her once chewing out Lady Bird Johnson in public. I suppose her punishment was not to live until Jan. 20, 2009, to see her formal liberation.

Agreed. I can’t wait to see the “race” boxes and lines removed from forms and surveys.

The show was originally broadcast on NBC in 1956-1957, when absolutely no one would have been offended by the term “colored folks”. IMHO, seeing it today, it was one of the best varieties shows on television. Nat (I hope you're not offended I don't refer to him as “Mr. Cole”, he was my elder and we were never close personally) got all kinds of stars, white and colored, and put them in entertaining situations. Eartha Kitt, btw, was half white, one fourth Cherokee and one fourth Negro. It is probably more accurate to call her colored, i.e., not a European of the Caucasian persuasion, as she was only one quarter “Black”.

Now, if can you find Cab Calloway on the NKC show. He does the absolute best “It Ain’t Necessarily So”. I can’t find him doing it anywhere on U-tube. Sammy Davis Jr. and Paul Tibbets seem to have left their mark on the role, but I prefer Cab’s interpertation. I found him doing it on the Sullivan show, but it seems bowdlerized and the chorus detracts.

If character were to be judged by the ability to accept unwarranted abuse without retaliation George W. Bush would be known as the only saint ever to win the presidency of the USA.
