For Conservative Radio, It’s a New Dawn, Too By BRIAN STELTER

Amid all the pressures on the radio industry, news-talk stations see an opportunity — and his name is Barack Obama.

After eight years of playing defense for President Bush, the conservatives who dominate talk radio are back on offense.

Hours after Mr. Obama’s election, the country’s most popular radio host, Rush Limbaugh, was talking about the “rebirth of principled opposition.”

Sean Hannity, the second highest-rated host, quickly cast his afternoon show as the home of “conservatism in exile.”

It is a lively time to be behind the microphone. One television talker, Joe Scarborough, is starting a radio show. Another, Bill O’Reilly, is ending his.

Several of the supporting actors in this year’s Republican primary are showing interest in the medium, too. Fred Thompson, the “Law & Order” star turned presidential candidate, will begin hosting a two-hour show in March, as the syndicator Westwood One is expected to announce this week. Mr. Thompson’s show would take the place of Mr. O’Reilly’s.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and a Republican presidential candidate, had been in negotiations with Westwood One for Mr. O’Reilly’s time slot, according to two people with knowledge of the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity because a deal was not struck.

Screw you, New York Times.

I second that emotion.

WHEN is this evil rag going to die?

Seemed pretty straightforward. A little wishful thinking about the market somehow drying up or becoming too fragmented but otherwise...

Radio is a dying medium, except for conservative talk radio.

Resurrection of the Un-"Fairness Doctrine" would be the nails in the coffin.

The scary thing is, the main thing Liberals know how to do is destroy industries.

The Slimes just did me an inadvertent service - I didn't know Fred was going to AM. If he's talking, I'm listening.

playing defense for President Bush

They did probably do that a little more than principle would dictate, but they did fight him on several big issues.

It appears that the upcoming relationship between Pinch Sulzberger and Frau Schlossberg may inject some much-needed Kennedy money into the NYT-Obama.

Liberals should get in the radio game - start their own network, maybe...call it “Air America” or something...I bet they would do real well...

Rush/Hannity/Coulter/etc. all stand to make massive revenues off conservatives for the next eight years.

After eight years of playing defense for President Bush

Not hardly. There's been plenty of well-deserved criticism for a number of President Bush's decisions over the years.

Being the “principled opposition” isn’t such a bad thing to be. We’ve seen what happens when R’s run as pseudo-conservatives and turn into RINOs...it’s time for the awareness to be raised that there IS an alternative.

Rush Limbaugh built his empire, radio and TV show starting 16 years ago, he was on cover of US News and World Report, and wrote “See I told You So”. I thought Clinton with Dem congress was end of the world, but looking back 1993-1994 was the most fun we had in last 16 years. It’s exactly like he says, we were free, they were for first and ONLY time (for 2 years) held responsible for what they did. And we had heros, Rush, Dick Armey, John Kassick. I dream for another 1993.

The past 4 years have been terrible, each one worst than the last. Tell me it’s over.

I have to agree. The “conservative” hosts I listen to are pretty fair and balanced. They don’t cut a lot of slack, to President Bush or anyone else.

Doesn’t surprise me really, I don’t even listen to him anymore. I really like Glenn Beck - and he trusts almost no politicians. Of course Michael Savage can be trusted to criticize everyone as well, but he has his own special niche!

Beck’s my favorite. Alas, conservative talk radio couldn’t get out the vote though.
