My Review of Vince Flynn's, "Extreme Measures"
Amazon.com Review ^ | 14 Dec 2008 | Jeff Head

Posted on 12/14/2008 7:00:27 AM PST by Jeff Head

I have read all of Flynn's works. I have liked every one of them and not been disappointed.

This book was no different, though it was less a front to back barnstormer about his principle character and action hero, Mitch Rapp, than others have been.

But that's okay, I believe Flynn did that on purpose to make some other points, and the book is nonetheless a great read, delivering a timely and critical message I believe is important for all Americans to understand.

It was, for me, still a captivating thriller with enough action, and delivering a very important message for our society which I believe was the thrust of Flynn's effort here...as well as showing some of the personal cost warriors such as Rapp and Nash pay in the clandestine services while defending our nation against its enemies.

All in all, I believe the novel is a very exciting one, mingling all of these goals together into one, and I give it five stars.

Importantly, I also believe it is an excellent expose about what manner of enemy we are fighting in the Islamic Jihadists, and what measures it takes to stop them...and an equally well done expose on how the political correctness of the day, and wrangling of our current politicians can not only impeded the effort, but invite the carnage to our shores.

I would recommend "Extreme Measures" for anyone wanting to see into the mind of the enemey, and for anyone wanting to see what manner of heroes we have fighting to stop that enemy against all odds, the largest of which that are stacked against them residing right here within our own borders and within the halls of our own political institutions.

I, too, have read all of Flynn’s books and loved them. Term Limits is where anyone should begin reading his books. The Third Option amd Memorial Day just might be the best two of his books, IMHO.

Another author to consider is Brad Thor. Scot Horvath is similar to Mitch Rapp and will do all he can to destroy and dismantle our enemies.

My tagline refers to Brad Thor and should give you some idea of his writing style.

I have given up tv almost completely, and recommmend the Vince Flynn audio books as a wonderful way to occupy the silence.

PS: I am older than you!

Thanks, I will certainly look into Silva’s novels.

Let me second that reccomendation, Jeff. Silva's books are superb.

Thanks for the good wishes on my books. They're going well. "Bargained For Exchange" is almost out of print (and I'm told becoming a collectible in some circles. Go figure.) And "A Grave Breach" was a finalist for Foreword's Book of the Year in the Thriller/Mystery category. The fourth is in the pipeine now. "Sovereign Order". Terrorist long thought dead comes back to wreak havoc on the Monaco Grand Prix. They're positioning it as a cross between "Black Sunday" and "Day of the Jackal". (Their description, not mine. Way too heady company for me to be that grandiose.)

An important book to read, and very relevant to current affairs. At this insane time in our nation’s history, we have to be grateful for real American men in the clandestine US services, who are very much like the operatives in this book. I have known such men personally...they are fearless, brave, and true, and they do not waver with the winds of political correctness.

Hey Jeff & Jim - There are a number of authors on FR who could use some exposure. Perhaps FR, without necessarily providing an endorsement, could maintain a list of FReeper authors and their works for those of us who would love to read works by patriots and help support them as well.

OK, who's going to be the first one to say to me, "It already exists, dummy"?

I read my first Vince Flynn novel, ‘Memorial Day’. I don’t think it matters in what order you read them. ‘Extreme Measures’ scared me more than most of his others, I suppose because the story line was similar to the Mumbai attack.

May God keep this nation safe.

I’ve already read a couple of Flynn’s books, and just picked up two more. I’ve started reading Transfer Of Power and it’s a great read from page 1, like most of his books.

I was surprised at the time that he got it published...and enjoyed every minute of it.

They have continued to publish his stuff and all of it sends needed messages, particularly this latest one regading our fight against the Ilsamic Jihadists nad the sickening and disgusting politicizing of it.

I can understand how a book such as “Term Limits” would give legislators reason and encouragement to expand gun control. They never seem to realize that their retirement is what we are actually encouraging them to perform.

Same here...I have not read a one I did not like. Term Limits was a great start.

This latest is extremely timely and spot on with its message.

Vince Flynn long ago replaced Tom Clancy as my favorite author of this genre. I am not quite finished with Extreme Measures, but agree with the author: it is excellent, and there is a very interesting agenda!
