I have $2,000 to spend, looking to buy myself a nice Christmas present....

Looking to buy a semiauto assualt type rifle chambered in either .223 or .308. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Availability of recommended rifle would be a plus, don't want to be put on a waiting list, already have a NJ firearms card to buy rifles and shotguns. Thanks

I’d think you could get a lot more lead than gold for the same money :).

No matter what you buy it’s more likely use is as a “defense” rifle.

I'm still trying to figure out which ammo to use in selecting a rifle.
0.223 does seem too small. .30-06 high on the cost/round side. .308 may be the logical choice. After watching the high speed AK-47 video, there are certainly questions about accuracy due to barrel stiffness and reciprocating weight and balance issues.

Check out the FNAR .308. Sweet gun based on the Browning Semi-Auto action. gunbroker.com has several listed for around $1400. 20 round .308.
I have an eotech holo sight on forward left side rail and a Leupold 10x scope for the main sight rail. Sweet rig.

I'm a former Marine and I carried an M-14 and then the M-16 in Vietnam. Both were great for different reasons. The former had stopping power, but the latter could put down an unbelievable base of fire.
However, the weapon that I most remember was the M-1 which I only fired during advanced infantry training. It's almost identical to the M-14, but doesn't have the mule-kick recoil (when held tight into the shoulder). Firing it was really sweet.
If I was in the market right now, that's what I'd be looking for. Try
here for starters.

If you have ever heard of or seen or possibly fired a Ruger mini 14 the M14/M1A is what they based it on.
Rock solid and quality built, can be bought plain jane or SOCOM, National Match, etc.
With 168gr. HPBT hand loaded you can really reach out and touch.

There is absolutely no need to buy an AR-15 manufactured by Colt. If you want an AR-15 clone, there are about 30 manufacturers building the identical rifle and many build a high quality rifle for hundreds less than the price of a Colt.
You ought to avoid the overpriced AR-15 clones completely and buy a Remington Model 742 or 7400, used, in .30-06 caliber for under $500. You could then buy an excellent .45 ACP pistol for less than $1,000 and still have more than $500 left to buy ammo for both the rifle and pistol. Ammo has become very expensive and you should definitely budget some dollars for ammo.

Huh?
You mean 7.62 NATO don't you? (308 Win.)
I have an HK-91 (7.62 NATO) with quick-detach scope. The dependability of this weapon is legendary. It's positive gas operated cartridge release system makes jamming nearly impossible.
Another feature is the tapered rifling which greatly increases accuracy for an otherwise, notoriously inaccurate class of weapon.
The weapon breaks down into three basic sub-assemblies in the field in seconds and can be cleaned, reassembled and returned to action in less than 30 seconds.
Although, for this one, you would only make a down payment with that $2,000. But shop around, there may be some still available at the price you can afford. (Bought mine for $450 in 1984)
