New York Giants star receiver Plaxico Burress is facing a mandatory 3½ years in prison and the end of his football career. His crime? Not having a license, which New York City never would have issued him, for the exercise of his constitutional right to bear arms.
Plaxico Burress is led to his arraignment in Manhattan. To be sure, Mr. Burress got caught because of what appears to have been stupid and irresponsible behavior connected with the handgun. But he does not face prison for shooting himself. His impending mandatory sentence highlights the unfairness and unconstitutionality of New York City's draconian gun laws.
Mr. Burress had previously had a handgun carry permit issued by Florida, for which he was required to pass a fingerprint-based background check. As a player for the Giants, he moved to Totowa, N.J., where he kept a Glock pistol. And last Friday night, he reportedly went to the Latin Quarter nightclub in midtown Manhattan carrying the loaded gun in his sweatpants. Because New York state permits to possess or carry handguns are not issued to nonresidents, Mr. Burress could not apply for a New York City permit.
At the nightclub, the handgun accidentally discharged, shooting Mr. Burress in the right thigh. He was not seriously injured, but he has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

You see, that is what I fear.
Many of these people hated each other, many were protecting their fortunes, some were idealists. The declaration of independence does not have the force of law. Conservatives believe in a nation of laws, of civilized men settling their differences in a civilized way if possible. If you want to start a revolution, you can count me out. I like it here.
i was unaware that violent crime ever left.
I assume that most gun owners who’d brandish are essentially cowards who mistake their weapons for malehood substitutes, and would only pull that on people they know (or assume) are in a weaker position than they are.
My grandfather was a NYC cop, and he told me that he was taught to never take his gun out of the holster unless he meant to use it, and if he meant to use it, he was to aim to kill, not wound.
But that was a great response you gave to the biker! :-)
Because you are comparing yourself to other 'big cities' that have done nothing to fight crime. Are you a member of the NYC CoC?
Or at least none that were reported.
Having been in traffic in Miami, I can definitely understand how stressful it can get!
Church of Christ? No, I’m Jewish.
I have to bite my lip on I5 when the bikers roar by whitelining at 80 mph. It is amazing that they want you to give them their share of the road but are willing to cut you off with inches to spare. One cut me off (whitelined to get in front of me) by inches as I was braking but sorely tempted to hold my position.
No. Chamber of Commerce
Yes, sometimes we have to let the asshats win, because it’s just not worth it otherwise.
Sort of like some bicyclists here in NYC, who ignore all traffic laws and sometimes come dangerously close to hitting pedestrians. I’d love to stick out my leg and kick them down, but that would bring far more trouble than I need. Sometimes we just have to settle for thinking of what we’d like to do. ;-)
Nope. But I am near Chambers Street!
Living OUTSIDE of NYC, I do not think under the current administration that Plax would have had ANY chance of getting the carry permit. I now live in NJ, where carry permits are also impossible to obtain. I will move when I can.
You mean you like it here now. I asked how much you would like it if Congress mandated that you turn in your battle rifle. How much would you like it here if abortions became mandated, as they are in China?
Universal Health Care is right around the corner. It will probably forbid any doctor from supplying medical care to you that is not authorized by Congress. It will deny you care that you could personally afford if you fail to meet requirements set by the government.
If you make an income which is greater than your neighbors, then you will be expected to surrender the difference to the government.
I sure hope that your "carbon-footprint" is not too large. You will be expected to adapt your lifestyle to that which will eliminate global warming. It's for the children, you know.
Disclaimer: I haven’t read the comments yet.
We won’t see the end of gun control until all people are treated equally. When famous and rich people go to jail for a cartridge in the trunk of their car like the peons, maybe we might get Rights back for all of us.
Dig a bunker buddy. They're out to get you. I'm burying my "battle rifle" now so that the feds that sold it to me don't ask for it back. BTW Larry Sinclair is a double agent!

Truth In Politics: Gun Sales Boom After Election Reporting Mike Flannery
CHICAGO (CBS) ― Gun sellers say the election of Barack Obama is helping them avoid the recession. Sales of new guns are booming - up an estimated 50 percent in the suburbs.
In Wednesday's Truth in Politics, CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports the gun lobby spent big trying to defeat Obama this year, outraged by his promise to reinstate a ban on military-style assault weapons. On talk radio, he was denounced as a "gun grabber." Now, as Obama heads to the White House, millions are rushing to reload.
Business has rarely been better for certified arms instructor Jan Gofron.
He's teaching a flood of new students about semi-automatic handguns as well as tactical shot guns some call "street sweepers."
The most powerful weapons are disappearing fastest from local gun shops. At Elmwood Park's Illinois Gun Works, sales started soaring as it became apparent Barack Obama would win the White House.
"Once people started to realize that the Democrats had a better chance, or seemed to have a better chance, they started getting nervous about certain gun regulations," said Illinois Gun Works' Owner Dan Mastrianni.
Recent gun sales are up nationally 42 percent. In Illinois, they are up 38 percent; and in Chicago's suburbs 50 percent.
"It's simply paranoia," said Thomas Mannard of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence. "And it's irresponsible, from my point of view, to be touting how wonderful this is. More guns definitely equal more death."
Mannard worked with then-state Sen. Barack Obama to pass Illinois' ban on assault weapons. Obama also helped close a loophole that allowed gun shows to sell weapons without doing background checks on buyers. Mannard now hopes for a national law.
Gun dealers say the threat of new rules will keep their sales booming.
"I don't expect this to slow down anytime soon," Mastrianni said. "What happened during Prohibition? Whatever people can't have, that's what they want. They can't get enough of it."
Like many, Mastrianni does not believe gun issues are anywhere near top of the president-elect's political agenda. Senior Advisor David Axelrod declined to discuss what, if any, gun-related legislation the administration might propose, nor when. He noted they are busy picking people for top jobs.
I've spent hundreds of dollars storing rifles out-of-state that fell under Kalifornia's assault weapons laws.
It's my understanding that the new and improved federal assault-weapons-ban that the liberals are pushing will even outlaw the Ruger Mini-14. What do you think are the chances of its passing? What do you think are the chances of your M1 surviving a ban that takes out the Mini-14.
To hear you talk, one might think the Heller decision was unanimous, rather than the razor thin margin of 5-4. What do you suppose that DC's laws would look like today if the minority in Heller had been in the majority?
Even now there appear to be no dealers in DC to sell people guns. But according to you, nothing to see here. Just move along.
Why the quotations around "battle rifle"? Are you in some doubt about its classification. The M1 is most certainly a battle rifle, operating semi-automatically from an en-bloc 8-round clip and firing a 30.06 cartridge. If it was good enough for our troops to carry during World War II and the Korean War, then it will be good enough for the banners to ban it.
Because it is a semi-auto just like the modern Browning "BAR" deer rifle. It doesn't have a high capacity magazine. It doesn't use shortened full auto ammo like the AK or babyshit bullets like the M4 either. I have a nazi 8mm mauser, an ishy Lee Enfield, and a 1903 springfield too. They were all designed for battle, but are obsolete and more like deer rifles. I am going to an all M1 hog hunt in the spring.
Why would anyone own a mini-14? Yugo SKS's are cheaper. I can get them in good condition on my C&R license for $149 to $200
