It's Priceless (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | November 18, 2008 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 11/17/2008 6:16:25 PM PST by jazusamo

Wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a world where there were no prices?

If you happened to want a Rolex or a Rolls-Royce, you could just go get one— or two if you wanted— and not have to worry about ugly little things like price tags.

There is such a world. It is the world of political rhetoric. No wonder so many people are attracted to that world. It would be a great place to live.

After Arthur Goldberg had served on the Supreme Court, he lamented that more of society's problems could not be dealt with as that court dealt with them— by reaching a decision and then declaring, "It is so ordered."

Politics offers something similar. Theoretically, political decisions are limited by budgets. But for many experienced politicians, that limit is mostly theoretical.

Government budgets, after all, are only projections of what is supposed to happen, not a hard and fast record of what has in fact happened. And seldom will the public or the media do anything so mean-spirited as go back and compare what the budget said would happen with what actually happened.

Moreover, politicians can put certain large expenditures "off budget" for any number of noble-sounding reasons. And if you have long experience in using political rhetoric, nothing is easier than coming up with noble-sounding reasons.

“But there really is no free lunch, except in the world of political rhetoric, a world that so many want to be in, where they can play Santa Claus without even the cost of buying a costume.”

Too long to be my new tag line, so I will keep the old...

Dear Lord, why couldn't have the first African American President been Thomas Sowell? That man definitely has it figured out.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.

Aye. Imagine the water-boy elevated to head coach in one day.

The sure wager is the Main Stream Media making jackasses out of themselves trying to cover-up the poor economic numbers and the let's-feel-good foreign policies.

I wonder if the RNC will be savvy enough to discredit the MSM once and for all. Alas, bet on the stupid party remaining dumb - easy win.

Enough

Well, he didn't take my advice when I told him that 20 years ago (seriously), so I can't trust his judgment.

As Dr. Sowell's book "Basic Economics" could have told us, without prices, there's basically no such thing as economics.

This is difficult for me to admit.

I've enjoyed Thomas Sowell's columns for decades. In fact, he's one of the reasons I turned away from the dark side and embraced conservatism.

Having said that, I'm having a great deal of difficulty accepting at face value the pronouncements of any black intellectual, following Colin Powell's endorsement of The One and even Condi Rice going wobbly. I was happy to ascribe to Dr. King's maxim that people should be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. (How did that work out for you, Dr. King?) Thanks to Zerobama and Rev. Wright, that's not possible for me anymore.

Given that 95% of blacks voted their skin color, I now hold them all suspect. Michael Steele and Thomas Sowell included.

Anyone else feeling this way?

I would urge you not to include Dr. Thomas Sowell in that list. He is a national treasure. Sowell, Walter Williams, Shelby Steele, Larry Elder and Clarence Thomas are some of the brightest conservative minds alive and a huge asset to our side. They have been steadfast to their principles in the face of huge criticism from their own community.

Let's not become like the libs and look at people as groups. Dr Thomas Sowell is a living genius and I would put my money on him to stay true to his beliefs over most people out there. Unless he proves otherwise by his actions I am going to remain a huge fan and student.
