As news of weekend wildfire evacuations spread in the Southland, thieves took note.
In Porter Ranch, a man accidentally left open the rear sliding-glass door of his house and forgot to activate the security alarm when he evacuated the area Saturday morning. When he returned at about 12:30 p.m., he found two women packing their car with what he said were his family's belongings, Los Angeles police said.
---
"They said they were waiting for a friend, Jerry," Officer Sandy Acevedo said Sunday, recounting the previous day's incident.
"Jerry who?" Acevedo asked.
"Jerry Maguire," the women replied.
As in the movie starring Tom Cruise?
"They said that it was a real person," Acevedo said. "They were unable to give us a phone number or address or any kind of other information."
Officers searched the women's pockets. Rios was found to have $43, allegedly taken from a nightstand in the house, and keys to the family's Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes, Acevedo said.
Officers also found numerous items allegedly taken from the house -- including a crystal fruit plate, an Xbox, a Louis Vuitton bag, a Coach wallet and Polo sneakers -- inside the women's green Infiniti sedan.

Another step forward for Economic Justice!
It figures they took the Cadi and the Sneakers, Totally stereotypical, sad and true.
To paraphrase Mortimer Duke ‘’Probably been stealing since he could crawl’’
Where there's a will, there's a way.
When we evacuated in Colorado, our town was crawling with law enforcement with barricades at each road in and out of town.
Nobody went in or out without proper ID.
We had no instances of looting.
They got it reaal cheap next door.
I use to live in Sherman Oaks California *Once upon an america ago* and the San Fernando Valley was such a great place family oriented....Fun places to go..Beaches not to far away and now look at it..
Infested with criminals people who hate the USA and fools!
Such a darn shame..
For you to do it is okay, but for a government official to make the order is not........
Great deterrent though and cuts way down on recidivism.
lmao...excellent response!
If there has been a declaration of emergency and there are looters, it might well fall outside of normal statute law.
Looters are considered during an emergency to be somewhere in the neighborhood of child molesters.
Better sign:
Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot twice......
Now, walking into a shelled-out supermarket for food, medicine, or chlorine bleach to purify water is another thing entirely in my mind -- depending on the circumstances -- but thieves taking the opportunity in the chaos of evacuation to rob a private residence means 'dead right there' to me.
In the time before automated garbage trucks and city leased trash bins I caught a guy in the back alley; he'd removed his well cut suit coat but still wore his tie while loading my two brand new steel trash cans into the trunk of his equally new Volvo.
they probably stole the infinity from some other victim.
LOL!!!!..............
This is nothing. Wait until the San Andreas lets go with an 8+ quake to see what L.A. is really like..............
I don't mind if they loot child molesters.....
You should have seen the LA Riots. An 8+ quake will make the riots look like the county fair.
They also said to clean your rain gutters but I doubt that one got a big response.
Also, the most noteworthy scene involving the police was a film of a guy in police uniform, with his police car parked in the driveway, standing on a roof hosing down what was reported as either his or his father's house.
Yup...I was just being a smarty-pants, ahem.
