Lock up your home before you evacuate, police urge (Sherman Oaks Looters)
LA Times ^ | 11/17/2008 | By Molly Hennessy-Fiske

As news of weekend wildfire evacuations spread in the Southland, thieves took note.

In Porter Ranch, a man accidentally left open the rear sliding-glass door of his house and forgot to activate the security alarm when he evacuated the area Saturday morning. When he returned at about 12:30 p.m., he found two women packing their car with what he said were his family's belongings, Los Angeles police said.

---

"They said they were waiting for a friend, Jerry," Officer Sandy Acevedo said Sunday, recounting the previous day's incident.

"Jerry who?" Acevedo asked.

"Jerry Maguire," the women replied.

As in the movie starring Tom Cruise?

"They said that it was a real person," Acevedo said. "They were unable to give us a phone number or address or any kind of other information."

Officers searched the women's pockets. Rios was found to have $43, allegedly taken from a nightstand in the house, and keys to the family's Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes, Acevedo said.

Officers also found numerous items allegedly taken from the house -- including a crystal fruit plate, an Xbox, a Louis Vuitton bag, a Coach wallet and Polo sneakers -- inside the women's green Infiniti sedan.

Anyone really think a LOCKED rear sliding glass door is going to stop a looter?

Not long enough! It takes a special breed of scumbag to rob someone’s house after any sort of natural disaster.

Hmmm, how can they be charged with 'breaking and entering' if they don't 'break'.

When I shared an apartment with my friend back in college his father stopped by and was looking the place over. He spotted my gun cabinet that had the big glass doors and the keys sitting in the lock. He asked me “Why do you leave the keys in your gun cabinet? The thieves can just take what they want.” I just looked at him and said “Because I don’t want to have to clean up the broken glass.” He thought about it for a second, smiled and said “Good point”.

I saw a program the other day, History Channel IIRC, that said that shooting looters was unconstitutional and that any officer or governor who made such an order would be guilty of murder..............

A “Welfare Infinity”

Kind of reminds me of the “Welfare Cadillacs” my Dad talked about when I was young. The people lived in falling down houses, but had an expensive car to drive.

I like the sign that was on the King Ranch and it still may be there.

“Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be prosecuted”.

$5 says there was an Obama bumper sticker on the car...

I would take that bet... Because it's probably not her car!

Was that an old historical fact from some time in the past or current in some part of the USA?
If I catch anyone here on my property, they will get prosecuted if they survive.
