The word British can be as offensive as negro and half-caste, according to a race relations body.
The publicly-funded organisations views have been adopted by Caerphilly council in South Wales for a leaflet advising staff on how to deal with the public.
In a section on what words or phrases not to use to avoid causing offence, the leaflet solemnly informs the councils 9,000 workers: The idea of British implies a false sense of unity many Scots, Welsh and Irish resist being called British and the land denoted by the term contains a wide variety of cultures, languages and religions.
.....
But Tory MP David Davies, MP for Monmouth said: Theres absolutely nothing offensive about describing people as British.
This is political correctness gone mad. Organisations like this are using public money to propagate their own narrow nationalistic ideas.

I got news for you the English don’t like that word either. My relatives over there do not like to be called British. They live in Kent and they are English not British.
That’s so gay.
It was the Roman Empire that subjugated the indigenous peoples starting between 45bc and 55bc. They came after their conquest of Gaul (France). Those people vastly outmatched by the disciplined Legionaries. The landing was possibly at the white cliffs of Dover. The people were a Celtic people. The warrior queen was Boadicia, and she went down fighting, near where St Albans, Hertforshire is today.
The Romans left, when the barbarians threatened Rome over 400 years later. Boadicia was a true Briton. The Ancient Britons were driven from what is now England, to Cornwall and Wales.
The name by ancient sea traders and others for these people was the BRYTHONS. The Romans called that land BRITANAI. When an attempt was made to unify all of these peoples, someone called the whole entity- BRITISH.
Political correctness has ignored the origin of the name.
The only problem is when they did go mad, people suffered terribly.
It looks like it will eventually get to that.
The funny thing is British was the name used by the Romans for the Cymri (Welsh), which is why Cymraeg (Welsh) is known as Brythonic gaelic.
The English are not primarily Celtic. They are the Germanic Anglo-Saxon, and should properly be called English (Angle).
This council is ignorant of their own history.
I’m part British and part Negro. I’m offended.
I’m from Brooklyn and don’t like to be called a “Long Islander.”
Holy mackerel, are you couscous? I suppose chicken fried chitlins is derogatory, too.
I remember the British. Fine folks. I wonder what happened to them...
