Obama Appoints Fairness Doctrine Backer

Monday, November 10, 2008 10:41 AM

By: Jim Meyers

President-elect Barack Obama has designated former Federal Communications Commissioner Henry Rivera to head the team that will select the next FCC chairman — an Obama move that bodes poorly for conservative talk radio.

That’s because Rivera is widely believed to support the reinstitution of the so-called Fairness Doctrine.

Originally instituted in 1949 by the FCC, the Fairness Doctrine required broadcasters over the public airwaves to give equal time to opposing political views.

Since talk radio is overwhelmingly dominated by conservative hosts, and liberal talk radio draws few listeners, the “equal time” provision would likely force many radio stations to pull popular conservative hosts from the air rather than air low-rated liberal hosts.

Rivera served on the five-member FCC from 1981 to 1985 under Republican chairman Mark Fowler. His departure paved the way for the Fairness Doctrine’s repeal when President Ronald Reagan replace him with an opponent of the doctrine, Brian Maloney disclosed on his Web site The Radio Equalizer

“He’s not hurting. I’m sure the recent contract he signed guaranteed money.”

We will be the one’s hurting.

It might be good to start investing in Satellite Radio.

The Obama administration is really painting a picture for anyone who’s watching.

I heard Hannity report this afternoon that Jamie Gorelick is on Obama’s short list of considerations for Attorney General. The same Gorelick who was single-handedly responsible for the wall of separation that prevented the CIA from telling the FBI that the 9-11 hijackers were in the U.S. The same Gorelick who served as Vice Chairwoman of Fannie Mae and received over 20 million in executive compensation from that position.

We ain’t seen nothing yet, folks.

“I don’t know how yet, but considering how well it’s listeners organized against amnesty, it will easily go nuclear over self preservation.”

How about a million rifle march on Washington?

It applies to radio only. That is one of the aspects that will probably make it unconstitutional. But with the future of the SCOTUS up for grabs, who knows how they would rule?

He can also have an internet show like he does now for his 24/7 members. He may wish to waive his yearly subscription rates while he fights this in the courts.

IS satellite radio owned by rich and powerful dems as well? If so, then we really have no hope. Soros will probably buy up control in satellite radio.

That's the way it works with free enterprise. Rich liberals put their money where their mouths are and purchase propaganda agencies to further their political objectives. Rich conservatives don't spend their money on such things and therefore lose the propaganda war (and elections). You put up your money and make your choices.

They need to take some sort of pre-emptive strike and not wait until the hammer and sickle come down.

Yep the advertisers would not place ads during the air time taken up by the hours that the radio station will be required to air to balance out Rush, Sean, Laura and the others. The station owners would take the hit and go out of business.

It's worse than you think. Not only is the Animal Farm “Fairness Doctrine” a regulation, IIRC it was challenged decades ago to the Scotus and found to be constitutional. I hope I am proved wrong.

I have XM. I now listen to Glenn Beck and Sean on static free radio. I don’t know why Rush hadn’t been on it sooner!

My unsolicited $0.02?

I think that the Dims need to be careful of what they wish for.

The FCC can regulate the airwaves, but not (at least, not now) satellite and the internet.

I think that if Rush, Hannity, etc go "private" (as it were)...the gloves really come off. I can see Savage, for instance, having a call-in hotline where disgruntled political staffers can snitch on their bosses....or jilted "companions" can squeal on the pols who ditched them.

It only takes one credible person to say "I snorted Coke with Barry Obama in the 80s" to knock down a whole empire.

Just sayin'. Of course, I don't think that pols are that smart, or that forward thinking, otherwise they'd not be politicians.

“It is the will of the American people.
Goodbye, Rush.”

I don’t think so as Rush owns most or all of his station, I believe. I might be wrong, but don’t think so as remember Rush saying something about owning the station a long time ago. Perhaps others know if this is correct or not.

Hopefully there are enough Democrats who would vote with the Republicans against a Fairness Doctrine. I believe the present SC would rule it unconstitutional.

AM Radio was on life support until Rush. It’s now a multi-billion dollar business, but libs don’t like it so they’ll destroy it.

They’ll drive it to Satellite Radio, since everyone won’t pay for that it will diminish it’s listenership and impact.

Anyone know the ACLU’s position on this???
