Defeated Palin makes triumphant return home; GOP infighting grows
SFGate (home of the San Francisco Chronicle) ^ | Thursday, November 6, 2008; 18:57 PST | Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer

Gov. Sarah Palin returned home in defeat to Wasilla, Alaska, today - leaving behind eyebrow-raising tales about towel-clad appearances and internal campaign feuds. [...]

Among the stories reported by Fox News and Newsweek magazine:

-- She showed up in front of John McCain campaign aides "wearing nothing but a towel";

-- She sent campaign staff on a shopping spree for her family that insiders described as the "Wasilla hillbillies looting Nieman Marcus from coast-to-coast";

-- She was so shockingly ignorant of basic civics that aides prepping her for her single debate realized she didn't know that Africa is a continent and not a country, nor could she identify the countries that comprise North America. [...]

On election night, the New York Times reported, Palin showed up at McCain's election-night gathering in Phoenix ready to read a concession speech. It goes against campaign protocol for a vice presidential candidate to speak on election night, and the move was vetoed by McCain strategist Steve Schmidt. [...]

"She didn't know the nations involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement," NAFTA - a key agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada," he said GOP insiders told him. She also "didn't understand that Africa was a continent and not a country" and asked for explanation about the difference between South Africa and Africa, he reported. [...]

And the lingering matter of her wardrobe spending continues - a Republican party attorney has been assigned to look into Palin's designer clothing purchases and, reportedly, to retrieve the expensive items. [...]

"An angry aide ... said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books," according to the magazine.

Still, conservative leaders downplayed those reports, insisting that base voters were deeply impressed by Palin and her contributions to the ticket.

Not to mention “reaching across the aisle to my friends”. YOu can’t beat a liberal by being a liberal, and McCain is a liberal.

I think you’re right. She was a big reason soft republicans bolted. Mac was suppose to play big in the suburbs but they thought she was a yahoo and voted against him. I thought originally her unfavorables were due to massive oversampling of democrats but from exit polling and the most accurate pollsters repeated that story.

Obama, Bush, and the Economy (and McCain's flub of the bailout fiasco, and the meltdown of the Dow) are the reason the moderates bolted.

Here's a clue.

Congress has an 11% approval rating.

It can be PROVEN that the mortgage mess is directly attributable to Congress.

Not only was Obama the 3rd leading recipient of lobbying money from the Fannie/Freddie folks, but you had Barney Fwank of Massachusetts sleeping with one of the execs.

McCain didn't even TRY to tie Obama to this, even though he was a Congressman.

McCain didn't even TRY to paint Obama as a clueless rookie in a dangerous world. Instead, he let the media define his campaign as clueless because his Veep pick was not internationally savvy.

Incompetence at the top should not be blamed on Palin.

Nor should the election results.

Without here, it would've been a Bush-Dukakis blowout and we would have had roars of "Mandate for Communism!"

Palin was the only thing which held for the GOP in this election -- even Norm Coleman lost to AL FRANKEN(*). That, and anti-gay-marriage initiatives.

We need to stop worrying about "electability" (so-called, according to the pundits) and worry about a consistent conservative message, including fiscal and monetary responsibility and an "America FIRST!" message instead of trying to outsource our jobs and intellectual capacity worldwide. And the elections will take care of themselves.

(*) He will, as soon as the recount is done.

No. Was it Sarah's idea to spend all that money -- or was it (as reported IIRC by Rush Limbaugh) donated by a third party?

And can you imagine the calls of "hillbilly" if she *hadn't* dressed to the nines?

Nice try, though.

I second the motion.

What educationaal level have each of you attained; and what are your opinions on abortion, gay marriage, and evolution?

(Typical fracture points for some GOPers with Sarah...)

DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING!

This woman makes alot of people afraid.

The key to the dishonesty of the left, and of trolls and others, is their inconsistency.

Bush had an Ivy League MBA (Harvard!) but "was not eloquent".

Sarah has a gift for the camera, and "is not qualified" due to lack of intellectual pedigree.

Incidentally, Sarah also made hay out of the claim that the Republicans are rich elitists.

And if McCain had had the common sense that God gave cement, he'd have tied Obama to the Subprime Crisis, and to Congress, faster than Clinton hitting on an intern.

But he didn't. He said "Obama is not a socialist and would make a fine President."

To blame this on Sarah reveals the prejudices (look up the word, please!) of the speaker.

One last point. No Ivy League pedigree necessary, nor particularly desired.

Clinton and both Bushes were Ivy League grads, as is Obama.

None of them have especially represented my views very forcefully.

They sure do look good in those nice new clothes.
And I’m glad little Piper got some new threads.

Money well spent.
Especially on the First Dude’s new suit.

“Who do you think raised the money?”

That’s what is killing me.

Look at the money spent by Obama on frivolous things.

Look at the MILLIONS that were donated to McCain within a matter of hours after her announcement as VP.

And they want to complain about the cost of the clothing?
Really?

Let’s do a cost-benefit analysis here.

How much would they have brought in WITHOUT Palin?
hmmmm?

The cost of the clothing is insignificant.

And as Sarah has already pointed out - alot of that stuff isn’t kept by her in the end anyway.

“And can you imagine the calls of “hillbilly” if she *hadn’t* dressed to the nines?”

LOL!
Exactly.

I thought the idea behind the shopping was to make sure they didn’t look like hillbillies.

unbelievable.

Right now all I can say is the McCain staff REALLY IS a bunch of losers.

And I don’t enjoy that.
At one point I was admiring the heck out of Schmidt.
But boy-oh-boy did they lose their way.

There were a lot of threads on this and the only names were those of top level professionals. I read every single one of them, including each and every post.

I'm satisfied the Mittbots were involved although not with ALL the stories used by the MSM. There were no doubt Democrats involved in some of this stuff.

Getting back to the Mittbots we heard similar comments being created about Sarah right at the beginning within minutes of McCain naming her. There are FR names associated with those clusters and they will be re-identified (as long as the moderators haven't deleted their accounts). No doubt you will see the results of extensive searchers somewhere on FR (probably within days) so keep your eyes open.

Obama spent $5.3 million on that stupid Greek stage alone, for his speech. Palin spent $150k for clothes and drew a bigger audience for her speech. Conclusion, Palin is much better at managing money.

Without Palin, McCain wouldn't have cleared 30% and it would have been a blowout. Mac needs to suck it up and own the disaster he caused.

Lucky towel.

What I’m most steamed about is the fact that she would have been SHREDDED by the MSM if she had shown up at a single event in “regular” clothes. The double standard is sickening.

We should rejoice in our knowledge that she was blessed with great beauty FOR A REASON. She looked like a million bucks, effortlessly, and probably spent LESS on her wardrobe than any plastic, botox-filled, JEALOUS reporter.

Enjoy your day in the sun, losers. We have our beacon in the dark, and she’s going to kick your butts back to the dark ages in 2012.

when you are governor of a state, come and make your piece..

Of which state are you the governor? Oh, you're not a governor? Well, I guess that makes your opinion as irrelevant as the ones you are dismissing.

Do you expect the public to believe that Sarah Palin could have served as city councillor, mayor, chair of a state commission, and governor without understanding how government works?

Even my fiancee, who hates Sarah Palin with a passion, thinks these allegations are bullsh!t.

At some point, these allegations will be so over the top that no one will believe them, not even the drive-bys.

“Even my fiancee, who hates Sarah Palin with a passion,...”

If I were you, I’d be re-thinking my future. Opinions on these political issues reflect basic values, and if there’s a problem now, there’ll be huge ones later on.
