Post-Election Depression: How to Cope

After Any Political Campaign, Depression Can Await the Defeated

It's over. Nov. 5 has come, and no matter whom you were rooting for, many political animals say the day after an election can bring on a special sort of blues. The bored kind.

"It's almost kind of a surreal feeling. [...] When her father's campaign ended during the Republican primaries, Huckabee said she felt more than a sense of loss.

"It felt like it didn't hit us until a couple of weeks later when we were like, 'Uh, what do we do now?' You don't know how to have a normal life anymore," [...]

"Getting back to the real world is probably one of the hardest things," she said. [...] Bill McConochie, the founder of Political Psychology Research, Inc.[...]

"What I do know from my research is there are two types of political animals, if you will," McConochie said. According to McConochie, how far a person falls on either end of a spectrum of "liberal" or "conservative" traits will determine how serious they will take a victory or defeat on Election Day: The more extreme in views, the more important the election.

"Their reaction will simply depend on how strongly a person is invested in the election process," said McConochie.

My 22 year old daughter was hysterical. She went on a website to find out how she could get a work VISA for Australia. I had to sleep at her aparment. The poor kid was hyperventalling.

I like Glenn Beck’s assesment this AM. John McCain would have been no winner for us, just less of a threat than Obama. With Obama the Republican party would be down the dustbin with the Whig party.

Well, now when the liberals start bitching about anything, anything at all, we can smile and tell them to enjoy what they voted for.

Act real happy, it will drive them nuts!

I can appreciate the thought but really I do not want any advice from the stinking one agenda media.

Never again will I trust these folks to tell the truth.

They have their so-called historical candidate of choice and will have to live with the consequences.

As far as I am concerned the MSM can kiss my rosy butt.

I went down to the range this morning, put on my hearing protection, and put several hundred rounds of stress relief into targets. On the way home I picked up a 12-pack of beerverages and a couple ribeyes. Figure I’ll fire up the grill tonight and hopefully improve my mood a bit more.

The very LAST intity I need to tell me anything about ANYTHING is ABC News. Why to they think I'm depressed? Hell, I'm not depressed... I'm scared for my country!!! But I'm not depressed... I spit on anything spewed by the MSM today and I'm offended by their offering.

Whew... I feel better now. :)

I'm watching this circus unfold from on my knees praying.

I'm in whatever party Sarah Palin decides to lead. The Republican elite can stuff it.

Look on the bright side (yes there is one)... The vultures are already descending upon the president elect. “Human rights” organizations are already calling for US intervention in a number of nations (without using the word, “military” of course). The market mavens (and commentators) are already talking about the limits of what our next president will be able to do (example: health care reform is off the table). Sports agents are already announcing what they will do to reduce the impact of new taxes on their clients.

The reality is now going to hit the 44th president with a force that all of his rhetoric and his paper thin resume have not prepared him for.

For conservatives, it’s time to retake the party and focus our message on what Americans can do, and what the government cannot do. The fight for the White House in 2012 begins in a few hours, and the 2010 fight for Congress will begin in days.

Let not your heart be troubled, the fight for America is just beginning.

I'm not depressed at all. Perhaps my old mentor Epictetus helps me at times like this. It's out of my control. So it's nothing to me. Aren't we supposed to make the best of things, come what may? I think there are several positives to this outcome:

1. McCain didn't deserve to be president. The guy has no anchor. His patriotism is admirable, but he has no principles. He chases issues around like a cat chasing puff balls. He jumped on the drill here issue, seeking political gain, but didn't know how to deal with it when the situation changed. The joy conservatives would have felt beating Obama would have turned to disgust mighty quick had McCain won. In my view, this election was a rejection of McCain as much as it was a rejection of Bush. McCain has admirable qualities, but he simply isn't a leader. He's perfect for the Senate, where you go along to get along.

2. First black president--He's not my kind of president, too liberal, and I'm a post-racial guy. I realize this is historic, and to a lot of people it's a big deal. To me, it's not a big deal. I never doubted that we'd gotten past racism in this country as a whole. But I was touched by all the crying young black girls. I think the impact of this on black Americans is profound, and hopefully a positive. They will feel more of a stake in our country, and hopefully will trust the rest of us more, not be so conspiratorial and negative, and will join us as patriotic Americans. They'll feel more a part now, and I am hopeful in the long run, even though it's a lefty, it'll be for the good of the country that blacks can now truly feel a part, for those that didn't up to now. Even Obama said as much in his acceptance speech.

3. Dems are now accountable--It's always easier to sit back and complain/criticize than it is to lead. You stick your head up above the crowd, you have to take the hits. Now they are accountable for what happens, and people will get a taste of what they are about. Hopefully it will be a learning experience for the country.

4. Reality check for the GOP--Conservatism became big business since the 90s, with ever tom, dick, and harry claiming to be one. Comedians and old djs became "conservative" talk show hosts. GOP jobbers started selling themselves as "conservatives." But the truth is that many weren't really conservative at all. They were scammers. Including the guy at the top of our ticket. This is a chance for the GOP to soul check, and hopefully be a little more serious about what it stands for. I think maybe Newt Gingrich could provide leadership in righting the conservative movement. And now that we are out of favor/power, maybe the fakes will jump off the bandwagon and stay off.

5. Buying opportunities--hey, if DEM control does end up hurting the market, we can all increase our positions in good companies at bargain prices.

That's just off the top of my head. I think we're all going to be fine. I trust in the Lord and His plan. I know better days lie ahead. That's my take, the morning after.

Oh yea, and I didn't even post all this rambling as a vanity! Be thankful for that! I'm so sick of all the vanities. Just post your thoughts in an appropriate thread. It's not that tough. Be well everybody.

Some idiot on Fox business news just said, “people are energized and when that happens, it is never a bad thing”. Oh, yeah? America is over. I had to put up with a highly paid nurse anesthetist at work yesterday who was gleeful at the prospect of an Obama victory and lauded the virtues of Sweden. I told her that I was a libertarian and that Sweden was full of drug addicts, had a high rate of suicide, and no innovation. If a highly educated, “rich” person thinks the government should supply all of our needs, America is over!

Actually, step #1 is turning off ABC News. I would also carefully consider distancing myself from other media outlets that celebrated and continue to celebrate Obama.

For me personally, I am looking forward to canceling my newspaper subscription this afternoon. I’ve been a subscriber to the Detroit Free Press for 30 years. It’s a liberal rag, but it’s been something like a tradition. I grew up on it. This election finally disgusted me beyond keeping my subscription going. The breaker was a big article the Freep wrote on two Detroit women who had a connection to John McCain - Mac’s ancestor held one of thier ancestors as a slave. Total repulsive hit piece. I have no desire to continue paying for this propaganda crap, even if I was raised on it.

I second that - I have just cancelled both local papers who were way in the tank for The One - keeping the Sunday edition for the coupons - needed now more than ever - and for the crossword - keeps the gray matter active. Will refuse to watch anything on the tube, even FOX, that may have commercials or fawning “news updates”. When the REvolution starts, I’ll know by hearing the gun fire.

If our business does manage to stay in operation, it will be due in part to getting rid of employees.

If any of them voted Democratic, your choice should be easy.

I am disappointed but not depressed. This is an opportunity to fight against full-fledged liberalism at the federal level.

In two years, we have another chance to ask America if they’re enjoying their higher taxes...was it worth putting the young punk in just ‘cause he was eloquent and black? I hope their answer is a resounding NO! and they punish his party.

I will be nauseated, no doubt, by the fawning coverage this jerk will receive...but I can also choose to ignore it as much as I can. And I will.

Finally, I don’t need ABC telling ME how to react to a loss.

Wasn’t it revealed a few weeks ago that CONSERVATIVES are happier than LIBERALS? That still is the case, mainly because we know we have the TRUTH on our side. :)

Enjoy a ribeye and cold one for me!

...just popped into my head re: 0bama while listening to some pol on the radio. I have no problem with the color of his skin.... it's the content of his character that scares me!
