WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother died of cancer, he said in a statement on Monday, a little more than a week after Obama interrupted the White House race to say goodbye to her in Hawaii.
"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer," Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility."
Dunham helped raise Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia, and Obama took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her on October 23 and 24.

Did he have power of attorney over her? Did he decide to stop any kind of life support?
Second it.
Will Barack deliver a “Win one for the Tooter” speech?
..I think they did that to King George V of England--in order to get the news into the evening papers in time...
Hey Phemone - did it escape your notice that this has been posted under breaking news a couple times? And you decided to post it again because??
What’s this? He’s not going to raise her from the dead?
Unbelievable. Unreal. WTH.
You’re right. My mother passed away like that this past June. My prayers go out to the family.
American always vote with sympathy. Remember how after Mel Carnahan died, people switched their votes to him and he won?
Prayers for the family. The timing may be interesting, but regardless, this is a loss for them.
“It would be ridiculous if anyone were to cast a sympathy vote for Obama because of this. My theory is that for every sympathy vote, there will be another voter who compensates by NOT casting a sympathy vote.”
I live in Missouri ... a state where you can still see “Still For Mel” ... people who voted for a dead man so yes, sympathy votes are real and timing is everything.
Wow, just before the 6:00 news. How convenient
If it has been my grandmother, I would have "set the world on fire" to use any option to fight the cancer by all means available!!
I have a strong feeling hat she did NOT approved his marriage with Michelle (racists???) because at seems that she and the kids did NOT visit granny the times the visited Hawaii, hmmm!!!
So.....does Grandma’s vote count?
...moving right along....
Not only pick up sympathy votes but neutralize fear of him and anger. It sucks when grandparents and love ones die, it’s the worst. But damn it why now?
Ironically, yes, he did. A few Freepers said a couple weeks ago they wouldn't be surprise if there was an announcement the day before the election that Toot had died.
RIP
