I have an interesting story to relay that took place earlier this week between my boss (a senior VP in the company I work for) and one of the Obama campaigns' internal pollsters.
Just to note, my boss is a republican and was meeting the Obama rep over lunch for other reasons. Politics obviously came up due to his line of work.
He asked my boss what her political leanings were and they did some chit chat around the issues and the impressions each had on the state of the race. What happened next was more than fascinating and should be a reminder to all of us to buck up and remain strong. All is not lost. In fact, we may be in a much better spot than we think - despite the national polls and what the daily media drumbeat to give up.
He asked my boss what she thought about Sarah Palin. While my boss is a republican she hasn't been nearly as enamored with her as most of our base. She noted concern about Sarah's experience, but said that she is still voting for McCain.
As she was explaining her perspective it dawned on her to ask why he (the Obama internal pollster) was interested in her view of Palin. He replied that Obama's campaign is extremely nervous about the energized republican base and what he called the "unkown factor" regarding Palin's draw as a candidate.
In the polls they're conducting around the country, and my boss wasn't able to relay specific numbers, the Obama campaign is very, very worried about how Palin appears to be energizing whole groups of people who don't typically get energized about politics, precisely because she appeals so strongly to the middle class, as well as women and dissatisfied republicans that stayed home in 2006.
More than that, they don't know how to guage and predict the support of people typically turned off by politics, but that are enamored with her "up from the bootstraps" appeal.

Regarding Palin, I seem to see a lot of jealousy among Republican pols and commentators. Surely they know that the only difference between their knowledge base and Palin’s is a few months time in Washington. B ut what they must envy is her personal force. None of the bright young pols who were on McCain’s list, men like Porter or Cantor, connect with the public like she does, and her political instincts are keen. If McCain loses, the Democratics are going to resort to everything short of actual assasination to discredit her in Alaska. If she survives and is re-elected, then she will be back in 2008/12/16 in the running for the Republican nomination.

I’ve seen the results of Palin. I’ve not seen her pull less than 10,000 people a rally with most having upwards of 20,000.
Richmond had at least 20,000 people. Election day is coming and Obama and the Democrats should be careful of chickens they are counting.
Not to be conspiratorial, but they likely just want to dispirit us, precisely because Obama has yet to seal the deal.
Thanks for posting this! I'm really glad I read this. Just today I was starting to say I thought (shudder!) that Obama just might win after all. But this blog post really makes it clear -- assuming it's not all made up -- that the whole thing is still up for grabs. It's up to us to keep working on this election, and make sure all your Republican friends make it out to vote!
So ... I forked over another hundred bucks to the campaign last night. What, dear reader, have *you* done to help The Good Guys win?

Yep, 2008 is not 2006, and while I wish McCain would have performed in the previous debates the way he performed tonight, he did finally show up to one.
Guys, you have to ignore the polls, they are OFF, and OFF BIG TIME! They are to the point of absolute absurdity. I know its hard, when you have nearly every media outlet telling you its over and Fauxbama is going to win it, day in and day out.. but its just not true.
I’m sitting here in PA< where some polls have claimed Fauxbama has a 15 point lead.. 15 points??? Please... others are claiming that much or close to it in the national polls... Absolutely insanity. The last person to win the white house by that sort of margin was Reagan in his re-election. The last person to win a first term by anything close to that was Reagan in his first election.
I’m sitting here in PA, seeing fauxbama ad after fauxbama ad at least 6 per 1/2 hour of TV now, and you want me to buy that he’s going to win this state by the largest margin since Nixon’s re-election in 1972???? Are you kidding me? It doesn’t pass the smell test guys!
I’m sitting here on the ground in PA seeing without question the weakest support for a democratic presidential candidate here since Dukakis in 1988, and the press are trying to tell me that this schlub is going to not only WIN this state, but win it by a large margin???? Sorry, but that’s just not reality folks.
While the economy is a weight on McCains neck, the economy now is nowhere near where it was in 1980, and Fauxbama is nowhere near the politician that Reagan was.
Fauxbama only ever had a chance to win this thing by a squeeker ever. The idea he’s got a landslide coming is laughable.
I know its hard not to get dejected, especially watching the MSM night after night and day after day telling you something different, but trust me guys, this race isn’t over, and we aren’t getting “crushed”. The pundents aren’t picking up what’s going on on the ground at all, and neither are the pollsters.
Do NOT GET DEJECTED, that’s what they want, the only way Fauxbama has any chance at winning is if republicans get dejected and stay home.. he cannot win if the base shows up excited and enthusiastic. I know its hard when you keep hearing negtive message after negative message, but those messages aren’t true folks, so stop letting them get to you. If you need to, just turn off the TV if you are feeling that way. The suns going to come up tommorrow, no matter what, if you are getting emotionally drained by the crap, just ignore it. Show up on Election day, fight hard, Get Out the Vote!
This race is nowhere near over, and the idea that Fauxbama has this in the bag is comical. He’s losing here in PA, I don’t care what the polls tell you... hes going to lose the election if you just stay focused, positive, excited and get out on election day.
I am from a very small town in WA State. I have to ask, is there real concern about going to the poll? I mean are you afraid someone will cause you some harm or something?

Here is the deal:
Most polling firms are now employed by media companies.
Media companies are BLEEDING money.
Political advertising is different from ALL other advertising: payment must be up front.
Therefore, it is in the best interest of the media companies and tbe pollsters to keep the race close as long as possible, thereby to draw the most advertising bucks from it.
Sometimes, they’ll portray one candidate as sinking in the polls. This is in order to cause that campaign to drastically increase their ad buys.
It’s ALL about the money. More specifically, the money the drive-bys — and their pollster lackeys — hope will keep them afloat.

I think the Obama folks are most concerned about Barry having to return to the senate and one Barracuda presiding over that group of “government employees”
Obama out spent Hillary by 3 to 1 in Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and South Dakota .. yet Hillary won those states even after she had lost the nomination... People still voted for her. I believe the constant plaing of Obama commercials turned people off.
In 2004 Kerry was running as many as 30 commericals a day on Ohio TV stations during the final 2 weeks. Bush ran next to none. It was not because Bush did not have the money, it was because too many commericals turn people off Big time.
There is a school of thought that believes that Kerry by running so many spots, ticked off enough voters to give Bush Ohio. No matter what station there was a Kerry spot in every commerical break. The spots were not bad, but seeing them over and over just made them an irritant.
There is a lot of evidence that too many commericals are counter productive. They no longer convince people to vote for a candidate but make voters wish they would never see or hear of the SOB again. The way to accomplish that is to vote for his opponent.
