Except - and this is big - debaters in High School do not have to measure EVERY word that can come back to haunt them for the rest of the campaign.

Very true, but this is about image and about influencing the independents and swing voters and moderates on both sides. The bases are still going to vote for McCain or Obama no matter what, and the bases are the only ones that are going to haggle over every single word.

The swing voters on the other hand are going to go off of the image they get tonight.
