John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Fridays scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen, McCain said.
Still waiting for Malkin to appear. Pres. Saakashvili on live with Neil at the moment.
Masterstroke. McCain is waging a war against a campaign of attrition by the Obamedia, following their script means certain defeat. This decision is wholly consistant with his character and message of putting country first.
Please bear in mind that the economy is the ONLY area where Americans (inexplicably) trust Obama’s leadership abilities more than McCain’s. He’s changing the game yet again.

“anyone with the name CatOwner is obviously a liberal..LOL”
ditto!
Not a written rule, but 85+% of the time, I think this is pretty much true...
if it were a dogcatowner, I’d probably call them a moderate
LOL. If Obama doesn’t want to do his senate job, let him debate Palin. He’s been running against her anyway, and now she has to step in for her boss while he’s serving the people.
Axelrod: You got to get out there and take credit for it.
Obama: Yes yes, thats what I'll do. Take credit for it.
If I remember correctly, the fake one is the one who stated “Fed should have broad authority”.
I think McCain’s timing was a little off. The time to make this announcement was 5:55pm ET, not 2:55pm ET. That way it would have taken over the evening news and Obama’s dithering would have been palpable. As it is, as long as Obama has a position by 6pm, the MSM will have time to completely recast the matter in Obama’s favor.
I’m sorry you feel the gloom and doom. I believe as Senator McCain said recently that the fundamentals of our economy are okay.....hahaha.....My head isn’t in the sand but you might wanna lay off the kool-aid.
Well, if anything passes, no matter what it is, it will not be very palatable to us conservatives. But McCain’s plan is much better, because it basically means that only institutions in truly terrible situations will sell to the fund. There is no way a CEO is going to take a $20-30 million pay cut just so he can unload some inconvenient positions. This would be a buyer of last resort, a backstop on the market. It would enable Washington to differentiate between true tears and crocodile tears, which isn’t easy for them in the current situation.
Oversight is clearly needed. McCain is right on that. And there needs to be something in there about the reverse auction* or some such thing, because otherwise the Paulson will overpay, as he fully intends to in order to boost his Goldman shares and help his CEO buddies on Wall Street. Bernanke basically send yesterday they plan to buy these things for way more than sellers are asking.
*Reverse auction means sellers put in the prices they want to offer this stuff at, and you buy up starting at the lowest prices until you get filled. It creates an incentive for sellers to lowball and helps ensure the taxpayers actually profit from this. Bernanke and Paulson want to intentionally overpay for some reason no one can figure out (because they are behaving dishonestly).
I think McCain should have IMMEDIATELY headed to Washington DC as soon as he finished his news conference. They could have shown him landing in DC in time to begin work this evening with the congress.
Wow, I'm SHOCKED! bah
“He isnt showing calm in the face of this crisis.”
Bull...
What he is showing is LEADERSHIP.
In terms of political chess, he has BRILLIANTLY pigeon-holed Obama. It’s CHECK.
If Obama fumbles this ball, it’s CHECKMATE.
I believe that is a left-over from the new Chinese posters from that quake. ;)
Joe Lieberman...
How brilliant would that be? Have McCain out front each day, exhibiting all his leadership credentials, thereby forcing Obamason to attempt to do the same. But because I don't think he will be allowed to use a teleprompter in the Senate (don't know, just a guess) he will come off as his usual stumbling self.
You are in denial. I am a Commodities trader, who also had a Intrade Account from 2006 and 2007. What do you do for a living mate?
1000 times morre accurate than what? Explain
They had Obama at 44% ten days ago, and now have him at 54%.
They blew the 2004 race, the 2006 Senate Races until the last 3 days.
Sean just tends to get a little crazy. I love him and listen to him everyday in the car.
