John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

A good move by McCain to postpone his campaign, but pushing bad legislation is not what’s needed. Calm leadership is needed by President Bush, the White House economic team, and congressional leadership. I suggest short term interim steps to stop the bleeding, followed by thoughtful legislation to shore up our financial infrastructure.

I think McCain essentially said that, this morning.

I’m surprised Boortz is saying this is a bad move by McCain, good move by Obama to continue with debate. But then, Boortz doesn’t like government intervention at all really.

**Now 0’s people are saying this was *his* idea *first*.**

They are lying and we all know it. If that were true Obama would have suspended his campaign this morning and canceled the debates himself. Nothing but a coward is Obamantion

Most people, who are not political junkies like we FReepers, don’t follow things as close as we do. But they will see a politician who is putting his personal interests aside for the country and they will appreciate it. They won’t hear about the little details and don’t care to. My guess is that McCain will be up in the polls this weekend.

The solution is to politically target those people responsible and get rid of them.

Wow, are you clueless or what. Politically targeting these people doesn't fix the mess they created. Do you even realize there's going to be NO CREDIT? NO CREDIT? Comprehend? The US Economy is going to freefall into an abyss not seen in nearly 80 years!!

You guys are totally clueless about the gravity of the situation we are in right now. Politically targeting the people that caused it? Great, I'd love to also, but that's not going to fix this disaster!!

Good point.

this response is not credible. But now that it’s made (”it was all my idea”), Obama can’t also say that he disagrees with it.

Yep. That’s what really galls me about this stunt — McCain is playing into the hands of Wall Street crooks who want the money handed over NOW NOW NOW, with no scrutiny, no accountability, no rules, or else THE SKY WILL FALL.

Yep... McCain is making the right choice. He should tell Obama that he can debate his vice president if he wants too. Otherwise he’ll be there by himself.

I like it. Obama needs to raise $100 million per month. McCain needs to raise $0. If Obama follows McCain's lead, then it will look like he's being a follower, and not a leader. If Obama continues to campaign, then he'll look like Nero fiddling while Rome burns. All of the talk into the weekend will be about McCain taking charge, instead of nitpicking about his debate performance.

And, if Obama insists on having a debate, he can debate Sarah Palin. That would elevate her stature and diminish Obama's.

Plus, Biden is a Senator as well. Hillary Clinton is a Senator. They all have to stop campaigning or risk looking like cheap political operators.

Alternately, McCain is bat-stuff-crazy, and this gives us a valuable peek at what a McCain presidency might look like. Fine by me if Obama would also peel back his mask and show us more of the real Obama.

Obama has no choice but to cancel the debate if McCain claims the nations business at this time supersedes a candidates desire to get elected.

This talk here and elsewhere that “the debate is on” is beyond idiotic since it does take TWO people to debate.
