'SNL' Palin 'Incest' Skit Angers Viewers Viewers, Bloggers Think Skit Went Over Line

POSTED: 11:30 am EDT September 22, 2008 UPDATED: 12:14 pm EDT September 22, 2008 For the second week in a row, NBC's "Saturday Night Live" has taken to lampooning Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin -- but this time, it has angered conservative viewers over a skit that suggests that the Alaska governor's husband, Todd Palin, was having sex with the couple's daughters.

In the skit, show guest host James Franco plays an assignment editor at the New York Times at the head of an editorial meeting. During a mock assignment meeting where the paper announced that 50 reporters were being sent to look for dirt on Sarah Palin, a Times "reporter" asks, "What about the husband? You know he's doing those daughters. I mean, come on. It's Alaska."

In response, Franco's character said, "He very well could be. Admittedly, there is no evidence of that, but on the other hand, there is no convincing evidence to the contrary. And these are just some of the lingering questions about Gov. Palin."

“There is no need for sarcasm. And there is no need to put the word challenge in quotations marks.”

I was quoting you.

THIS IS THE MOST RIGHT-WING ATTACK ON THE MSM SNL HAS EVER ENGAGED IN, AND WE HAVE A BUNCH OF IDIOTS WHO CAN’T THINK RATIONALLY ATTACKING IT! I’M FED UP WITH THIS STUPID COMPLAINT.

If you haven’t seen it, here it is, in all it’s anti-elite, anti-media, anti-propaganda glory:

“I have already challenged NBC by a phone call, and I will be writing letter to NBC and GE as well.”

Got it.

SNL will never make fun of the New York Times again.

“Yes, that is what SNL does. It satirizes. But it went over the line when it had a foolish reporter suggest Todd Palin committed incest with his daughters.”

Would you prefer an UNfoolish reporter have said the line?

“I think the more important question is why any one would find a suggestion that Todd Palin committed incest with his daughters so hillarious?”

Why is that “the more important question”?

No, you don't have it all. SNL can mock whomever they want. But suggesting that a man has committed incest is over the line. That is not funny. Rather it is reprehensible.

Here’s the sketch:

It’s satirizing the New York Times.

Case closed.

Of course it is satirizing the New York Times. We agree on that. Where we disagree is suggesting that Todd Palin committed incest is funny. I see nothing funny about that. But if you find that funny, go ahead and laugh.

But suggesting that a man has committed incest is over the line. That is not funny. Rather it is reprehensible.

The reason I think this was well done is that it was a "fly-on-the-wall" look at an organization like the NYT.

The fact that SNL used Todd Palin, his daughters, and incest in the same sentence is not the issue. The issue is that this is what IMO the reporter(s) THINK. And the fact that the assertion was treated the same as if this reporter had suggested that Todd was involved with space aliens, deserves a thumbs-up to SNL.

In fact SNL did a bang-up job of exposing just how petty and provincial the NYT is. They actually turned the tables on the NYT - exposing THEM as the true small-minded bumpkins - instead of the folks in Alaska.

Was the reference to incest crass? Of course. But don't blame SNL; blame the NYT and left-wing elitist snobbery for even having the "incest" thought in the first place.

The skit didn’t “suggest” Todd Palin did anything. It suggested that the MSM, which has run with suggestions that Trig isn’t Sarah’s, that she faked a pregnancy, that she should have had an abortion, that she should stay home and be a good mom, and that she engaged in a scandal called “Troopergate” (there was a real troopergate they weren’t interested in) are out-of-touch dishonest imbeciles.

Did you notice that “Karl Marx” works for the NYT in this fabulous bit?

I always find it hilarious to insinuate that someone is committing incest. It’s not quite as funny as accusing a person of pedahpilia, but it’s up there.

Even reading this in print is disgusting. I can't believe such crap was broadcast over public waves.

My wife says that every time the media attack governor Palin, more women are become like to feel camaraderie toward her.

Let the media keep doing this nasty work. It might boomerang.

Yes it is the issue. The skit could have been created without the incest comment.

For God’s sake folks, this skit is a rip on the MEDIA!!! And how rediculous they are behaving!!! For once SNL’s taking a shot at the liberal media!!! Sheesh.

Perhaps that is so, but they still managed to get in a dig at Sarah Palin's family if viewers have to be hit over the head with the "humor" of it. If few "get the joke, it's not a joke. I'm sure they could've come up with something other than "Palin family incest" to take a shot at the liberal media.

What is “pedahpilia”?

You are SO missing the boat on this one. They aren’t “insinuating” anything. They are pointing out the media’s lack of concern over any factual knowledge whatsoever as they try to destroy Palin and her family.

Why do so many freepers get their talking-points from Rush Limbaugh, who probably just saw a headline rather than hearing (sadly, but hire somebody, Rush) the actual bit?

And why not re-evaluate when you actually see it for yourself?
