Mod note: Do no post any screenshots of Governor Palin's Yahoo account on Free Republic.
Thank you.
On the heels of media reports that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was using a private Yahoo e-mail account (gov.palin@yahoo.com) to conduct Alaska state business, hackers have broken into the account and posted evidence of the hijack on Wikileaks.
An activist group calling itself anonymous claimed responsibility for the compromise and released screenshots, photographs and the e-mail addresses of several people close to Palin, including her husband Todd and assistant Ivy Frye.

To have had this account at all was not smart, and to not have purged and closed it once she knew she would be nominated was both moronic and amateurish.
That's a good start.
But there's more to worry about than just that.
Scenario 1: Someone gains access to your email and posts it. You've got that covered.
Scenario 2: Someone gains access to your email and deletes all or some of it. ???
Scenario 3: Someone gains access to your email modifies the stored messages. ???
Scenario 4: Someone gains access to your email and sends out email, purporting to be you, in a manner that is unflattering. Say, adding your name to a bestiality mailing list. While CCing your mother. "Yes, I'd like to receive daily pictures of people having sex with goats! Thanks, RobRoy." ???
I dont care all that much about internet security.
That's not surprising. A lot of people don't care about physical security until they've been robbed or mugged. You just haven't been mugged yet.
Well if it’s a fake like many say then they knew a lot of info to put it together, email addresses for the contact list, personal pictures (from an airplane taken of Bristol and Trig) that looks like cell phone camera quality....
And since that message is FROM a cell phone then Bristol was in on it unless they spoofed her cell phone number to send the fake email a message from it...or knew what Bristol’s cell phone number is. I highly doubt that Bristol would be in on the faking of Sarah’s personal email address. So that leaves spoofing or knowing what it was.
BTW yea I already left her a message that her number had been leaked onto the internet and she should talk to Dobson/Cellular one to have it changed.
Dressed like that? She was asking to be raped, I tell ya.
All the things you mentioned I would consider a minor inconvenience.
Dems are scum - add this reason to the list.
ROTFLMAO
>>That’s not surprising. A lot of people don’t care about physical security until they’ve been robbed or mugged. You just haven’t been mugged yet.<<
Actually, I’ve been robbed. I still leave my doors unlocked.
Sheesh, I hope my insurance company doesn’t get their hands on this and trace it back to me!
I’ve lost email accounts. I’ve had a hard drive with “important” stuff on it. I was shocked at how “non-impactive both were. They were minor inconveniences.
Maybe that is why I don’t worry much about this stuff any more.
The one thing I will say is that I am very careful about information like bank account, ssn etc. I at least look for the little lock.
I worked a PCI project a couple of years ago.
To make things fair and equal, the Obama campaign should release all of Obama’s personal emails.
What’s “good” for Palin is good for Obama.
HARD DRIVE = HARD DRIVE CRASH....
Good catch.
This is complete crap.
The gov.palin@yahoo.com address gives the whole scam away. If they would have went with Saracuda@yahoo.com they might have fooled a few more of us ;-).
Lets say you take a picture and send it to email, then reply to the phone with the email, then use the phone to text message reply again. Subject header stays the same because it's a reply, but not sure if phone message replies append "RE:" to the front and also not sure if it keeps the original attachment.
Or maybe someone forgot to send the attachment...my wife does that a lot and has to send it again.
Foxnews is confirming the hack.
Hannity says they got private phone numbers from the e-mails.
Then once they got the numbers they started releasing private voicemails.
The Department of Justice is now looking into this.
Foxnews/Hannity is now confirming the hack.
They hacked into the account at 3 or 4 in the morning. Gawker.com could be in serious trouble.
The Department of Justice has launched an investigation.
Wikileaks for sure. It's one thing to get internal files from dumpsters or disgruntled employees, but to house or release information that is most definitely feloniously(sp) obtained is or should be considered a felony as well.
Yahoo, maybe not. If a Yahoo employee was in on the hack then yes probably. Definitely the employee, and maybe the company depending on if the employee was given permission or directed to release the info.
Holding ISP's, mail hosts, web hosts, etc responsible for actions of others that may or may not be affiliated is a dangerous slippery slope that we've already dealt with in other places (MP3 downloading, web forums, etc etc.).
If it was a hack done from the outside then Yahoo isn't responsible at all...well except maybe for their piss poor security, but not sure what the crime there is beside negligence.
