For the record, EVERYTHING I put in writing I do so with the assumption that the one person in the world who hates me and would hurt me any way they can will be able to get to it.

That's a good start.

But there's more to worry about than just that.

Scenario 1: Someone gains access to your email and posts it. You've got that covered.

Scenario 2: Someone gains access to your email and deletes all or some of it. ???

Scenario 3: Someone gains access to your email modifies the stored messages. ???

Scenario 4: Someone gains access to your email and sends out email, purporting to be you, in a manner that is unflattering. Say, adding your name to a bestiality mailing list. While CCing your mother. "Yes, I'd like to receive daily pictures of people having sex with goats! Thanks, RobRoy." ???

I don’t care all that much about internet security.

That's not surprising. A lot of people don't care about physical security until they've been robbed or mugged. You just haven't been mugged yet.

All the things you mentioned I would consider a minor inconvenience.

Actually, I’ve been robbed. I still leave my doors unlocked.

Sheesh, I hope my insurance company doesn’t get their hands on this and trace it back to me!

I’ve lost email accounts. I’ve had a hard drive with “important” stuff on it. I was shocked at how “non-impactive both were. They were minor inconveniences.

Maybe that is why I don’t worry much about this stuff any more.

The one thing I will say is that I am very careful about information like bank account, ssn etc. I at least look for the little lock.

I worked a PCI project a couple of years ago.
