This was just breaking on ABC 13 out of Houston...AP reports platforms discovered to be destroyed along with platforms.

They are doing live recoveries of Bolivar right now which has been leveled and the platform story is just breaking out as they are talking.
And how many hurricanes do ANWR and the oil shale regions have every year?

Pipelines can be very easily damaged by shifting sands. I can’t imagine the terrain is that irregular in the gulf, so that knocks that a few wrungs down the ladder. We’ll see...
The process is slowed by some of the hoops the jurisdictions have to jump through with FEMA in order to make sure they can get reimbursed for the money they spend early on. Each truck has to be inspected and photographed and measured and all the insurance and paperwork has to be provided to a FEMA rep who is usually pretty overloaded with details.
You can throw all the money and words at it you want, it still takes time to get it all in motion and a myriad of little things you would never think of, unless you've done it before, will crop up to butt-bite you hourly at first.
So far, from the research I’ve done (I’ve been inhabiting the Hurricane threads), Ike is a storm that the oil industry should have been able to handle OK. Some platforms are certainly gone. Some pipelines damaged.
I’m not going to believe ANYTHING that the AP has to say about this until I find out what the INVESTORS AND SPECULATORS weigh in on Monday. They are a whole lot smarter than the dopey press.
The major concern I have about oil/gas is whether the electricity situation is going to affect them in a big way - that means, peripherally, that their workers need electric accommodations, too, not just the plant equipment.
Too bad we don’t have any pictures of polar bears covered in crude oil. Or maybe a few forlorn critters riding floating oil rig debris.
I have my doubts on this report. I’ll go with the earlier reports. This is AP...nuff said

I agree with your read wholeheartedly.
I’ve seen nothing that major parts of the oil/gas industry were very much affected by Ike.
My guess is that oil/gas will spike up tomorrow morning on the commodities market, erode steadily, and close lower by the end of the day.
Some offshore platforms lost to Ike
At least 10 production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico have been destroyed by Hurricane Ike, the Minerals Management Service said today.
Spokeswoman Eileen Angelico could not reveal which facilities were lost, but said agency officials do not expect the major producing platforms in the Gulf to be among those destroyed.
Agency officials, conducting flyovers of the Gulf late Saturday and today, identified at least 10 facilities that had been destroyed, but Angelico warned that was not a firm number.
``This is preliminary,'' Angelico said. ``The number may change. We expect to see more damage than we saw in Gustav.''

Sounds pretty minor in the overall scheme of things. I agree with those that say this story is likely 90% AP hysterical hype. This strikes me as being straight out of Michael Crichton's State Of Fear.
I’ll be watching the chart candles on a few Bakken and Marcellus small companies that actually have production - for scalp or swing trades in the am......
Also, Bloomberg.com is reporting that damage to oil rigs and refineries was much lighter than thought, and the oil prices have actually dropped. This could be really bad news for the MSM

Bad news for Chuckie Shumer who said that because gaas prices went down below $4 a gallon there is no need to drill.

The first stories coming out after something untoward has happened are always WRONG. The press (always) and the on-scene observers (generally) don’t have accurate facts. The full extent (such as it is ) will be known by Tuesday or Wednesday.IMHO
