Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

It is incomprehensibly disorienting
(and for a very very long time) when
you go back to shreds, and your
life ‘anchors’ are gone.
It’s been 16 yrs since my home was
demolished; and to this day, there
are moments when I’ll need something,
a kitchen or cooking item, purse, etc.
And then, bingo .. reality: oh yeah,
that was before Andrew.
That exercise continues, and probably
will remain. It’s a tangible, lasting
shock to your brain.
And done!
And done!
Thank you and stay safe!
God keep you safe
Yep. That’s on an oil rig out in the Gulf...the wind gauge is about 400 feet above the water, so the winds are going to be a bit higher than they would be at the surface, and obviously there’s nothing out there to stop them. Still, though, wow, look at that pressure, down below 28.60. They had to get hit head-on by Ike and be very, very close to the center to get that.

Geraldo Rivera plans to stay in Galveston Texas tonight in a 30’ building.. Is he DOOMED??

Your work and the time you sacrifice away from your family is deeply appreciated by many of us.
Sorry I can’t read the whole thread, but does anyone know whether Katy is on track to be on the clean side or the dirty side of storm. Thanks.
Finally finished all our storm preps. I’m vacuuming and cleaning bathrooms now. LOL =)
RS, I think a lot of people were so burnt by Rita that they either think 1) traffic is going to be horrible or 2) the storm is going to break east at the last minute. I can tell you that everyone (but me) on my street kept insisting that we’d wake up today and the storm was going to Beaumont.
I also think that Bill White and the Galveston mayor totally underestimated this storm.
A tremendous amount of reading on the subject - especially on post-mortems on how they got the surge forecast wrong - as in way too low.
I've forgotten more about Katrina than you'll ever know.
From your posts on this thread, I sure as heck agree with the first part of that statement.
Is that what passes for civil discourse in Pennsylvania, land of hurricane experts? Stay classy, dirtboy.
No, it passes for what I think of your posts on this thread. How anyone could say these hurricanes are always overforecast, when the storm surge for Katrina was UNDERFORECAST, with fatal results, shows ignorance of the deliberate kind. I can't cure you as a result, but I sure as heck can demonstrate to others that your advice is not to be heeded. Oh, and I've lived along the Gulf coast. And my parents lived along the Gulf coast for 25 years. I watched Rita like a hawk for them. Made the right calls, too.
The last broadcast ???
You betcha, put me on the tard ping list.
May God bless you and keep you safe, OB1!
The very best to you! I’m sure there will be many who will be grateful for your service.

I saw that....I feel so sorry for those little children. their mother sounded like a Darwin award candidate.

Report from easternuswx.com, unconfirmed, that one of the approach streets to I-45 on Galveston Island (61st Street) is flooding. The island is probably getting close to being cut off from the mainland.

Yes, what a fool! It's apparently dawning on her that the storm will be worse than she had expected, but she said she "couldn't evacuate" because "I have animals, I have kids." I hope her two daughters don't die because of her foolishness.
