Hurricane Ike Live Thread III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 12 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 5:12:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.

The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Oh..I agree completely. If you need a politician to tell you when to get out..you are a hopeless fool.

I just know that the media and libs are going to try and blame this on the Republican Gov.....so wanted to get this stuff on record in this thread.

Did you hear the woman in Galveston this morning on FOX? She’s in an old Victorian in the middle of the city- she’s NOT LEAVING.

The she is going to die.

I can’t confirm this, but I’ve read on another forum that people saw on TWC where Jim “Storm Stud” Cantore said that HALF of the people on Galveston Island did not evacuate.

CNN just confirmed it, though they said the number of people apparently planning to stay on the island is around 15,000-20,000.

They can try it. It won't work.

Are they trying to beat the death toll from the 1900 storm? (shaking head)

I dont understand the logic of some people.

The storm moving south of Galveston would still be bad or worse, as it puts Galveston on the ‘dirty side’ of storm.

The dem woman mayor has already screwed up..there are no two ways about it imho.

God Save Them!!

I pay (very high might I add) city taxes so I pay for those services. If my life is in danger, I might. Other than that, probably not. More likely my husband will help others that are remaining in our area if it comes to that. He was Emergency Commander in a refinery for many decades. I’m in good hands :-)

If I thought it was really coming to that, I wouldn’t be here right now.

Fox news is getting word that people are not evacuating for this storm like they did Gustav! They are having trouble evacuating people. Federal officials are concerned.

She may not die. My grandfather survived the 1900 storm in Galveston when 6,000 to 10,000 people died and there was no seawall at the time. I grew up on stories of that storm.

Watching khou online.

“If you’re not out of Galveston yet, your time is almost up.”

A report from the community of Surfside: water and sewage has been cut off, dealing with slow flooding already, Blue Water Hwy is impassable. The intercoastal waterway is spreading out with the tidal surge and is mixing with the Gulf back and forth.. no flow either way anymore.

Any one watching FoxNews? They have Heraldo on a beach in Galveston!

He was on top of the sea wall and I watching a big wave in the background and it hit the sea wall and doused him BIG TIME. Just had to laugh at that.

I don’t understand it, either. I wonder what percentage of those folks are families? There is no way in hell I’d subject my children to such a risk. Even if survival was assured, if nothing else, forcing them to live through and retain the memories from such a scary day & night??
