Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Good. I hate to see someone die in real life.
I don’t think they’ll have anywhere near 4 hours of calm in this eye. It’s not a very big eye and the storm is moving quite rapidly now.
I must be the only one on FR that likes Shep
Man, this storm is bombing out on landfall. The outflow has just exploded over the last hour.
It would be tragic, but he lives for this stuff. His Choice.
Cantore doesn’t look like he’s having near as much fun as Geraldo.
No, the rest of us just don't admit it.
geraldo.......macho, macho man..........he tries to be a macho man........ RME
May a thousand prawns be blown into his mouth and nose by the eyewall.
Here in Minneapolis, gas is $3.59 per gallon.
It’s gone up only 10 cents in the last day or two.
I suspect t’ll be going up a lot more once they determine how bad the damage is to the refineries..
And I was complaining about the winds a few minutes ago. I went outside, and it was nearly calm. Then a gust nearly slammed me against the wall.
So forget what I said about sustained winds. I'm getting sustained gusts!
If that's the best you can do, then so be it. Enjoy.
you should take something for that ;^)
*snicker*
he amuses me
