Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Obama to appear Saturday on ‘SNL’ (During IKE?!?)
upi.com ^ | 09-12-08 | upi
Yes, we are staying put and are expecting up to 100 mph winds according to the news people. My 90 year old mother lives a couple of miles from so I will be going to get her soon. We are as ready as possible.
I see that Obama is scheduled to be on SNL just as Ike hits shore. Maybe he can make the waters recede.
My nephew just married a great gal from Angleton. :) Fortunately, my nephew bugged out with her family yesterday. My sis and bro in law were staying (League City) last I heard from them.

Nasty! I thought they only had those in the middle east.
Thanks for checking in. Stay safe, and know that you are in our prayers.
Thank you both for this information. I am feeling a little better about his decision now.
I will be sending out prayers for those close to or in the path of this storm.
well that will be just great../s...as the SNL cast makes fun of SP all night. Obama campaign...backfire we can believe in.
And proud of it.
Can’t help but worry about the ‘super germ’ lab in Galveston.
Geraldo on the wall now...what an idiot! Wonder where he is staying during the storm?
We will be praying for you!
That’s a good place for him. We don’t need any lightweights getting in the way down here.
Landfall is expected around 1:00 tomorrow morning.
SNL airs at midnight tomorrow night.
I’m not following your math.
he will be on a rooftop with a sign for help not too long from now.
Godspeed, all.
Prayers up!
After Katrina & Rita the cell phone company I worked for started changing all their generator to propane. We were told, in the long run, they will cost you less money.
the outer bands and flooding will happen way before landfall. No power.
That would be the mother of all storms, that would probably trump 911.
