Hurricane Ike Live Thread III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 12 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 5:12:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.

The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

I can’t see the building those reporters are staying in surviving.

Or them either.

The Galveston storm of 1900 killed between 6,000 and 10,000 people, I don’t think Ike is going to beat that record.

Any adult keeping children or spouse with them is committing homicide.

By all means, you should flee.

Flee from anything dangerous.

Flee! Flee immediately! And don't come back!!!

the guy already was regretting his decision to stay.

He said that at noon they tried to get a bus to get out, but the last one had already left.

He said he was going to try to get to the high school that was designated as the only official shelter on the island.

If I was him I would be hauling to that hotel all the media is staying at. It might get pretty damn crowded in that hotel.

GALVESTON, Texas — Galveston officials say it’s too late to leave before Hurricane Ike blasts ashore because it’s no longer safe to leave the island city.

Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas said Friday that many residents had left the city after the mandatory evacuation order, but that now the winds are too strong for anyone trying to drive over the causeway to the mainland. She advised residents still there to stay in their homes and ride the storm out.

She also announced a curfew for the city, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday to Sunday. All city services will be shut down Friday by 9 p.m. — including police, fire and ambulance — so city workers can take shelter during the storm.

The city also opened a shelter of last resort at a local high school, where about 150 people were staying Friday.

Excuse me but I've been praying all day for people down there!

I'm not getting one bit of pleasure from this disaster.

I'm simply stating what my intuition has told me about this storm since it first formed.

If you would like to discuss this further I suggest you freep mail me.

That’s a great video link, but I can’t hear the audio. It’s driving me crazy. I’ve tried every audio control I can find, but no luck.
