Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.
Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.
The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Bradybug, Alicia I believe came in at a Cat 3, and when it was over Kingwood it was still a cat 1, from what I remember. I think Alicia was a minimal cat 3, so its possible you could get cat 2 winds. i think some of the links have wind forcasts that you might check.
Ike is pushing a lot of water, tide is way up in Galveston Bay.
Radio just said that that Galveston is evacuating immediately and they are expecting a storm surge that could potentially come within a half a foot of topping the seawall.
Quitman, TX is Sissy Spacek’s birthplace !
They even have a short street named after her.
Nahh, I got plenty of cat food and bullets this time around.
I remain the only person to EVER successfully loot the Eaker Compound!
And on THAT note, guess ah bettah hit the road
for work!
See y’all later.
pine trees don’t uproot so easily. they more likely will bend and twist. if they uproot then they will probably be the least of your concerns at that point
A Hurricane Warning has been issued from Morgan City LA to
Baffin Bay TX.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued from south of Baffin
Bay to Port Mansfield TX. A Hurricane Watch remains in effect
for this area.
A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect from east of Morgan

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the
center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 275 miles.
Winds 100 mph, 945 mb, moving WNW at 10 mph.
What should we expect as far as wind speed assuming a cat 3 at landfall?
Anyone with more hurricane experience have an idea?
Katrina made a real mess of the trees up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi (about an hour's drive inland from the coast). That storm is a good example, once you're out of the storm surge area - she hit with Cat 3 winds. Remember that as these storms move inland, they spawn tornadoes.
This is a fact, and it will remain one as well.
Entergy suspended Louisiana restoration this morning pending Ike's landfall. In the process of reshifting operations towards TX eastern coastline.
In one of the info flashes on The Weather Channel last night, they gave us the info that law enforcement wouldn’t check immigration status of evacuees, to the surprise of almost nobody here. My question is that wouldn’t it be better for Mexicans to evacuate South in this case?
We're starting to get some thunderstorms associated with the hurricane bands.
Inland storm damage depends upon how quickly the storm is moving. A fast moving storm will retain higher sustained winds and gusts further inland. A slower moving storm will have lower windspeeds inland, but will allow for greater rainfall and flood potential.
I live in the little town just west of your dad. Caution him to be prepared for power outages and other damage due to fallen tree limbs. Our big trees do not get storms like this often and have not been “thinned” out like those on the coast. We tend to build sheds, porches, and awnings with just nails instead of screwed in straps so there is a chance of a lot of debris. Ike will move over us quickly, but we still might be in for trouble.
pinging Glenn Campbell!
Got a call from my mom in Gulf Shores (AL). Said that as cars drive down the beach road (West of 59), water is splashing the tires. Still waiting on pics of the waves down there from my cousin.
I have nothing substantive to add to the discussion ... I’m just puttin’ my location in my tagline.
Wow! Quitman....
My family and I used to live in Quitman...my folks used to run some businesses there.
