In a week of records surrounding the Republican National Convention, Fox News Channel earned another one with its weekend documentary on vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
"Sarah Palin: American Woman" averaged 2.7 million viewers in its debut at 8 p.m. ET Saturday night, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday afternoon. That included 673,000 viewers in the adults 25-54 cable news demo.
Nielsen said it was the highest-rated primetime documentary ever in the 12-year history of the channel, surpassing high-rated ones recently about Barack Obama and Palin's running mate, John McCain. "Barack Obama: Character & Conduct" averaged 2.3 million viewers for its mid-August Monday showing in the 8 p.m. "O'Reilly Factor" time slot while "John McCain: Character & Conduct" the following night in the same time slot averaged 2.6 million viewers.
It follows Fox News Channel's strong performance during the RNC, when it beat every other network in the primetime slot. That boost gave Fox News Channel the top slot among ad-supported cable in primetime last week and made it No. 2 in terms of total day. It was the first time that Fox News had ranked that high among cablers in three years, during Hurricane Katrina coverage.
Also, Thursday night's first part of a four-part interview with Obama on "The O'Reilly Factor" averaged 6.6 million viewers. It was the second highest ratings the show had ever received, and the highest in five years.
CNN landed in fifth place during the week in primetime, and eighth in total day while MSNBC was 20th in primetime and 28th in total day, Nielsen said.

What's up with that anyway?
sarah has an inner glow
that lights up those around her.
Correction:
Said: “Let’s now do that.”
Now was a typo. Meant to say “Let’s NOT do that.”
I just think we need to rise above what the opposition is doing.
“I just think we need to rise above what the opposition is doing.”
Yes, I agree. We need to start behaving like ‘gracious winners’....lol!
I just liked that it was the NY TIMES that posted it.
I saw the Documentary, I have it on my DVR. The video of before the birth of Trig was excellent. I have to agree that that show did wonders to introduce Governor Palin to the rest of America.
The current reaction of the Obama Campaign is proof positive on how panicked they are. “Lipstick on Pig..” comment was awesome. I hope the media shows it more and more. Because there will be more backlash.
Now McCain just needs to keep the pressure up, Sarah just be yourself.
Next test is the Debates............
I am glad Fox did this documentary. My wife and I watched it together. I think she was undecided about Palin, since she didn’t watch any of the convention coverage. I even think she may have been jealous of all my fawning praise of Sarah.
She got to see who Sarah Palin is and after it was over, I turned to her and said, “I like Sarah Palin because I see so much of you in her.”
Yes, she smiled. :)
Was that Greta? She has ‘(Somebody’s Name) Palsy.’ Her facial muscles are paralyzed on that one side of her face.
I used to wonder what was up with that, too, but now we both know. ;)
It was a terrific show. I loved the part with her describing having to do the swimsuit part of the Miss Alaska competition, and all those male judges comparing all the girls’ butts!
Bell’s Palsy? Greta?
Smooth? Yes. That comes with nearly 20 years of marriage.
But it was honest, too. Sarah Palin reminds me of my wife, and the wives of many of my friends: hard working, talented, smart, no-nonsense, conservative, unwilling to accept wrong doing, and pretty.
Yep. That’s it.
I agree. She’s like all of my friends, too.
And Mrs. Palin is just like me, if you substitute White Tail Deer for Caribou. Well, she’s taller, and I’m only the ‘Mayor’ of my own domain, LOL!
I like her very much.
Ohhh....that's smooooth!
OMG!!
Not a bad case, but it affects my mouth somewhat and one eyebrow will not raise. A bad case is the lady on PBS who teaches sewing.
The real question is, did your wife put a smile on your face later on?
