Minus U.S. Money, Obama Team Presses Donors
New York Times ^ | September 9, 2008 | MICHAEL LUO and JEFF ZELENY

After months of record-breaking fund-raising, a new sense of urgency in Senator Barack Obama’s fund-raising team is palpable as the full weight of the campaign’s decision to bypass public financing for the general election is suddenly upon it.

Pushing a fund-raiser later this month, a finance staff member sent a sharply worded note last week to Illinois members of its national finance committee, calling their recent efforts “extremely anemic.”

At a convention-week meeting in Denver of the campaign’s top fund-raisers, buttons with the image of a money tree were distributed to those who had already contributed the maximum $2,300 to the general election, a subtle reminder to those who had failed to ante up.

The signs of concern have become evident in recent weeks as early fund-raising totals have suggested that Mr. Obama’s decision to bypass public financing may not necessarily afford him the commanding financing advantage over Senator John McCain that many had originally predicted.

Hey what about that $10 mil Obama said he raised in one day after the Palin pick was chosen. Yep, Just as I thought and we will probably find out in the recording thereof . . . didn’t happen. If it did it was probably just a last burp from the Hollywood libs before the heartburn set in.

If it is a meltdown of the Obama Campaign.... ( McCain’s campaign should make a note of it and use it as a TV ad ) ..... can we really trust the future of America with Obama ?

Anyone who needs that many people for one field is bound to be a horrible President. How to decide among 300? I thought Clinton had problems making a decision...

If that is the case that donors are limited in helping,,, better give it to help the legal defense fund to help counter voter fraud.

Well, he'd be dead wrong about that.

A baby is a (sometimes disguised) blessing from God.

Yep. Dems spend 100 million on a 14 hour party. Meanwhile the Republican convention cost pocket change.

The way McCain and company has run their campaign so far brings tears to my eyes - its that beautiful. If they pull off the win, what Schmidt and company did will be studied for a generation.

I am taking this post with a grain of salt.

The Anointed One has Soros. The Chosen One can certainly hit up Hollywood. The One America Has Ben Waitng for has Bill Ayers and his dad. Not to mention Chavez, and the Wahabbists.

Nah. Your dems have plenty of dough. All they have to do is figure out how to hide its sources

I think it’s a replay of Dean’s financial collapse last time around, based on Internet contributing. My theory is these clowns report pledges from guys still living in their parent’s basements, who later welsh.

Another analogy might be with the dot.com bust. Come April 14, 2000, the downturn in the technology stock market turned toxic, because people sitting on capital gains, or even ordinary income from exercising insider stock options, hadn't set aside cash to pay the income tax. Instead, they had put the gross gains into the market, and now had to cash in their stock on the downturn. The Obama phenomenom is proving now to be another bubble, dragging down all who "doubled up" in their bet on him.

Just a hunch- this will be followed up in a couple of weeks by a story that proclaims the brilliance of the magical one as he manages to break all records for all time and has refill his coffers.

Update- Obama camp says it raised $66 million in August: Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama raised $66 million in August, a record for a presidential candidate that illustrated his continuing appeal to donors and his robust outreach to new contributors. ... The campaign said it raised the money with the help of more than a half million, first-time donors. ... "The 500,000 new donors to the Obama campaign demonstrate just how strongly the American people are looking to kick the special interests out and change Washington," campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement.
