Many Clinton Supporters Say Speech Didn't Heal Divisions
Washington Post ^ | August 27, 2008 | Eli Saslow

Hillary Rodham Clinton's most loyal delegates came to the Pepsi Center on Tuesday night looking for direction. They listened, rapt, to a 20-minute speech that many proclaimed the best she had ever delivered, hoping her words could somehow unwind a year of tension in the Democratic Party. But when Clinton stepped off the stage and the standing ovation faded into silence, many of her supporters were left with a sobering realization: Even a tremendous speech couldn't erase their frustrations.

Despite Clinton's plea for Democrats to unite, her delegates remained divided as to how they should proceed.

Dick Morris and others are saying what we all know - the speech actually did more har than good. Everyone went away with buyers remorse.

She just gave added 3 points to McCain’s margin of victory in November. Dick Morris is right....the Dems are going to have a serious case of buyer’s remorse.

What I found interesting is she said nothing about *why* her supporters should vote for Obama, just that they should because he is a Democrat.

I think she chose her words very carefully. She never actually asked anyone to vote for Obama. She said that she would. And she said it was important for a Democrat to win.

But she never asked her supporters to support Obama.

What I got out of the speech; “No Way, No How, No McCain - But I am not going to give Obama my Delegates.”

As expected she bashed Bush and McCain and then voiced support to Obama, but I did not sense full sincerity in her speech. This was not a swan song speech. She sounded like she expects to be back, and soon.

I don’t think she changed many PUMA’s minds.

Hillary didn't say they should vote for him because of hope and change?

But she never asked her supporters to support Obama.

She said no way no how McCain, but she didn't say it was Obama that was going to do it. What will happen, after the convention, if Obama's polls continue to plummet, helped on by revelations of his complicity in funneling money to radical groups through the Annenburg (sp?) group, of a really, really tight relationship with Ayers and Dorn, and, oh, video from Larry? Would party leaders pull the plug on his candidacy?

The entire purpose of the superdelegates is to allow party leaders to pull the plug on a candidate for whom they now have buyer's remorse.

Obama is a textbook example of why the Democrats have superdelegates. But this is not a mechanism they can use in Sept or Oct. They pretty much have to make their choice TODAY, and after that there is no going back.

I still think that there could be a floor fight and Obama could lose it all. Yes, it will destroy the party. Yes, it's unlikely. But some of folks in that convention hall believe it's the right thing to do.

Would not have it any other way.

Speech was carefully planned
Started out as proud mother, senator etc (dig at Michele?)
And then went on rambling about what she wanted to achieve in office (typical stump speech)
Didnt hear any specifics why to vote bho (only party unity)
Dems had two choices in the primaries, an overstuffed pantsuit or an empty suit
I think many regret they chose the latter

I thought she looked good and gave a good crisp speech. The expectations were so low for her support level of Obama, that just saying she supported him was greeted as good news. Amazing. But Obama has to really get it together, because I wondered when Hillary finished if they weren’t thinking they picked the wrong candidate.

Dick Morris is not the only one to say that-—just about everyone said it, Left or Right. For example, Susan Estrich, and Bill Kristol. Kristol pointed out what I missed: that nothing Hillary said implied anything more than a tepid support of Barack Obama, even though she “directed” Democratic/Hillary faithful to vote for him to “unify” the Party. Putting it that way only underscored her power to say things and have them taken seriously as an Authority in the Party. And the mere fact that she came off so well only left here admirers, like Estrich, with he rueful feeling that “Damn! WE shoulda won this thing!!”
SO , even though I thought it would be turning more Hillary’s way by now, and I anticipated a much more vocal posture among the Hillary supporters, still, it’s not over,
and my scenario may yet come to pass when the roll is taken/

Why should Hillary bother? OBAMA is supposed to be the one to make all the “healing” speeches, with eloquence and oratorical flare. Why didn’t he get up there, say a few clean, articulate and illuminated words, heal a few infirm and then tap dance on water for emphasis? Is he losing his touch?

"She just gave added 3 points to McCain’s margin of victory in November. Dick Morris is right."

According to this thread, the McCain camp is running an ad with video of Hillary Clinton saying during the primaries, "I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House. And Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002.

Huck,

I completely agree with your assessment. Hillary is the real deal, and Obama is the extremist college kid way over his head. Democrats nominated the wrong candidate.

This is my completely objective assessment as to why anyone who supports Hillary is better off with McCain winning in November.

1. McCain is only going to be in the WH for one term.

2. Hillary is probably somewhere down the line going to become Majority Leader. Who is she going to have a better working relationship with? I dare say it would be with McCain. Despite public posturing, everything I’ve heard suggests that the two of them deeply respect each other. There is no way Hillary respects Obama, and I think they would have a difficult working relationship, even though they belong to the same party.

Therefore Hillary probably gets more of her agenda passed with McCain in the WH.

Hmmm, maybe that might encourage Republicans to go ahead and vote for Obama. :)
