MOSCOW (AP) — A news agency says the Russian navy has deployed ships to blockade Georgia's Black Sea coast.

The Interfax news agency says the Moskva missile cruiser and other Russian Black Sea Fleet ships have been deployed to Georgia's coast to prevent any weapons supplies.

A Russian navy spokesman refused to comment on the report Sunday.

The Russians had actually just finished “war games” in the region, so they were definitely ready.

I’m still mystified as to exactly what (or which side) triggered this, though. The situation has been limping along for years.

Some observers suggest that the quick recognition by the US of Kosovo - which was opposed by Russia - may have encouraged the anti-Georgian Ossetian nationalists (who are supported by Russia) to think they could finally get recognition, too. But the question is, why now?

Has there been a military ship sinking since the Faulklands?
Oh that’s right, the russians sunk one of their own subs. With one of their own torpedos. Great job there russians.
Love to see the Moskva or one of the other russian ships on the bottom of the sea.

Once the Sudetenland is back to its rightful owner, everything will be ok.

Jawol... German-Georgians are being persecuted! The motherland requires “liebensraum”!

This is going to get very dangerous.

The old GUAM organization might be forced to respond to Russias aggression. GUAM consists of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldavia. Formed to counter Russian influence in the area. They were going to rename the group Democracy and Economic Development Organization and establish its headquarters in the Ukrainian capital. Azerbaijan has some decent aircraft. 48 Mig29's and they want to purchase 100 F16 Block C according to Wikipedia entries.

What I find ironic is Russia bombed the city Gori today. The birthplace of Stalin.

These are not Marxist Russians. They are Neo-Fascist Gangsta Russians. Oil and money is what drives them. The polite way to describe them is Autocrats.

The Finns showed the world how to take on the Russians in the Winter War of 1939.

“For 105 days the world held its breath and learned the word sisu, while Russians died at the incredible rate of nearly 10,000 per day....”

“The Russians attacked in company, battalion and regimental strength across frozen lakes, their dark uniforms easily visible against the white snow. Machine guns enfiladed the lakes and home guard troops, most of whom were expert shots, armed with one of the best military rifles ever made, the Sako Arms version of the Russian rifle, picked them off one by one”

“...With hardly any anti-tank weapons, four-man Molotov cocktail crews destroyed nearly 2000 tanks....”

These new Russians might be a more difficult animal. Here they are having some rest and relaxation.

Its all about oil and the new pipeline. Control of oil and gas in the region is the goal of Russia.

I don't think that is a current picture of her. She was painted in a darker green when I saw her at Sevastopol last year.

If she is out there, I do not know how capable she is; the Russians have not spent a lot of money on the Black Sea Fleet in recent years.

It may all be for show.

Go to You-Tube and search for the musical group, "Leningrad Cowboys" and their version of "Sweet Home Alabama" using the Red Army Chorus...

Russia's been preparing for this for months: war games, rebuilding the rail lines in Abkhazia, issuing Russian passports to most of residents of S. Osettia and Abkhazia (to bolster their claim of "protecting" them), provoking violence in Osettia, putting the economic screws to Georgia, etc.

Why now? Oil prices? Gambling that a lame duck president who's trying to keep the lid on world turmoil until the election, -- along with a US Congress that wants to see American defeat -- won't do a damn thing?

Probably both, and more.
