I think there are a lot more marriages like this out there than we would assume... Especially when it comes to society-types, and that definitely includes politicians who have or seek and “real power”.

What I don’t understand is how these women - especially liberal-minded women - justify their behavior in response to the public outing of these affairs... You would think in order to set a good example to other women (especially young women) that they wouldn’t be flagrant enablers, but I think that’s lost on them...

Amazing, isn’t it? Every one of these emancipated liberal soopeereeur womyn ends up helping their disgusting philandering husbands escape the consequences of their infidelity. And these “successful career” womyn think they are role models for young women.

Well, in a sense they do make good examples... of how pathetic the politically power-mad can become.

The very worst situation I can recall of political power-madness overcoming common decency was the Kopechne parents helping the Kennedy clan cover up the Swimmer’s murder of their own daughter! Disgusting degraded horrible people.

And especially the example to the children. When a wife first finds out there is a period of denial. The old adage about someone who cheats continues to cheat is usually true. Best to gather up your guts, face it, end the marriage and move on. Enabling makes enabling children who then have poor marriages too.

What would you want them to do then cause a public scene humiliate their husband/partner and immediately break from them.

I take a different view if they truly cared for that person and had been bought up to respect marriage then why not show the example of how to overcome this this IMHO is not being a flagrant enabler as you put it.

If it continues over the years then yes I think then the women does need to seriously consider ending the marriage however hard it may be especially if she truly loves him.

Of course there are marriages that are purely power marriages and no more and in this case neither party cares that much about the odd affair here and there but somehow I do not see that this is the case of the Edwards marriage. More likely this is something to do with fear on John Edwards part, fear of growing old, of Elizabeth dying and he being on his own. In some ways though I cannot stand the man and lot of what he believes a little part of me feels sorry for him and large part for her even though in many ways she is not the type of person I would warm to.
