Elizabeth Edwards Speaks Out on Husband's Affair
ABCNEWS ^ | August 08, 2008 | Jennifer Parker

Posted on 08/08/2008 6:31:27 PM PDT by ricks_place

ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former Sen. John Edwards has reacted to the news of her husband's affair, posting a blog titled "Today" on the liberal Daily Kos website and asking for privacy for her family.

In the blog, Elizabeth Edwards says her husband told her about the affair in 2006 and they worked through it. "This was our private matter," she writes.

She heaps blame on the news media for prying into her family's life, writing, "the toll on our family of news helicopters over our house and reporters in our driveway is yet unknown."

She disputes the National Enquirer allegations that her husband fathered a child outside of their marriage.

The Elizabeth Edwards blog on Daily Kos reads: "Our family has been through a lot. Some caused by nature, some caused by human weakness, and some – most recently – caused by the desire for sensationalism and profit without any regard for the human consequences. None of these has been easy. But we have stood with one another through them all. Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him.

"John made a terrible mistake in 2006. The fact that it is a mistake that many others have made before him did not make it any easier for me to hear when he told me what he had done. But he did tell me. And we began a long and painful process in 2006, a process oddly made somewhat easier with my diagnosis in March of 2007.

I tend to agree with you and I feel she would do anything to avoid the marriage ending somehow as well I believe she really does care for him.

Who are we say what is normal for a wife to react I think all of us act differently and we can say we would act one way or another but until it happens to us then I do not think we truly know how we would react.

I absolutely believe she loves him. I think from a place of character and substance, she married DOWN....not UP...

I must admit I also wondered that I do not question her motives as she has many reasons why she would not want her marriage to end but for him he might well be thinking well it is also marking time.

I hope we are wrong for her sake but hearing that the meeting was so long it does sort of blew my theory of the 2 meetings being blackmail pay offs out of the window.

Interesting I have heard of this several times and often it is not the loving couples that do this but ones who are or have had problems

If it is true he confessed in 2006 then she knew about this when renewing her vowels in 2007 this must have been hard.

She wasn’t diagnosed with cancer in 2007. She was diagnosed in 2004.

Interesting that Elizabeth is still spinning this and still covering silky’s ass by implying his affair was over and done with in 2006 before her “diagnosis”.

The news (”diagnosis”) she received in 2007 was that her cancer was terminal.

Hunter’s baby was born in Feb 2008, so conceived in mid 2007. Hunter’s “film company” received its last payment from the Edwards campaign in April 2007.

[In the blog, Elizabeth Edwards says her husband told her about the affair in 2006 and they worked through it. “This was our private matter,” she writes.]

— This makes Edwards worse. He not only cheated on her, but he asked his wife to help deceive the country about what a ‘wonderful’ man he is.

[She heaps blame on the news media for prying into her family’s life, writing, “the toll on our family of news helicopters over our house and reporters in our driveway is yet unknown.”]

— She refuses to believe that this is entirely her husband’s fault— those who run for office pay a price. We’re not talking about a little league coach. He ran for Veep in 2004, and he ran for prez. this time around.

I have to agree with you. She’s known Mr. Edwards is a sorry piece of .... for a long time. How could she not know. I listened to him for a minute and could see what a slickster he was/is. The man is as transparent as Casper the Ghost. She never complained about all that blood money he brought in year after year, why would she stop the charade just because he’s running around while he’s running for President?

I’m inclined to give Mrs. Edwards a pass on her response to all this. She’s been through a lot. Loss of her oldest child, innumerable hormone injections to reverse menopause and have two more children, treatments for breast and bone cancer and a husband who most probably has fathered an out of wedlock child while managing to get his philandering deeds chronicled by a super market tabloid and ultimately all the news networks. She’s in a very vulnerable position on many fronts.

"These wives like Hillary, Elizabeth, Spitzer’s wife, and others whose husbands have been unfaithful don’t react like any normal wife would."

To be fair, that door can swing both ways. Let's not forget this couple. He of the D.C. Madame scandal.

Senator and Mrs. David Vitter

And we began a long and painful process in 2006, a process oddly made somewhat easier with my diagnosis in March of 2007.

John's statement was that he began the affair in 2006 while his wife's cancer was in remission. Her statement says her forgiveness was easier after her diagnosis. Did she have cancer before 2007? I was under the impression they just found out about the cancer while campaigning in 2007.

Swing both ways? I didn’t mention anything about political party nor was it meant to be a partisan political statement. Toss Mrs Vitter into the group as well and any other political wife who “stands by her man” when he is unfaithful. Mrs. McGreevey is another one. My list was far from being all-encompassing.

Elizabeth Edwards is an enabler. She didn't come out and tell the truth and hold her husband accountable. Instead, for political expediency she kept quiet and said nothing to allow his campaign to go forward.

Then _she_ has the chutzpah to get upset because their private life was invaded by curious media.

Follow the money, Elizabeth. That is what we plan to do. Did you know he was stealing campaign funds to pay off the mistress? Did you OK that as well? If you enter the public arena then don't be surprised when you get asked such questions.

I can’t believe that she is continuing to make her thoughts on this public. This couple, I’m beginning to believe, deserve each other.

Knowing the Kennedeys it’s possible that the Kopechne parents were threatened with death if they didn’t play along. So perhaps I spoke a bit harshly. But it wouldn’t be the first time politically connected parents sacrificed their own child.

I think if Edwards continues to state the affair was over in 2006 and it is disputed by Hunter or other facts then maybe he should take a DNA test though in view of the health of Mrs Edwards both Hunter and John Edwards should just keep quiet IMHO if both parties ignore it the press will eventually give up.
