I’m inclined to give Mrs. Edwards a pass on her response to all this. She’s been through a lot. Loss of her oldest child, innumerable hormone injections to reverse menopause and have two more children, treatments for breast and bone cancer and a husband who most probably has fathered an out of wedlock child while managing to get his philandering deeds chronicled by a super market tabloid and ultimately all the news networks. She’s in a very vulnerable position on many fronts.
Maybe she somehow blames the cancer on the hormone treatments to have the 2 younger children and maybe she was the one to have pushed for that. She may also blame his subsequent affair on this the fact that she was ill and also overweight, the overweight may have again occurred due to the late pregnancies and hormone treatment, I cannot remember seeing photos of her prior to that treatment.
The fact remains of course if her illness and weight did contribute to him having an affair shows how shallow and unqualified he is to be President.
The biggest problem though I see with this argument is the today's climate and attitudes towards marriage and morals in general. It will be difficult in a few years time to choose a candidate on either side who does not have something similar in their past, in fact in this round the majority of the Republican candidates were on second and third wives. Actually I may have got it wrong but I think on the Dem side only the space alien had been divorced. Of course divorce is only half of the story because as with the Clintons one can remain married but live separate lives.
Also one can have many affairs and treat men/women badly in between marriages as well so on moral grounds alone I think everyone with moral convictions in the next few years will have a tough time picking candidates. I was saying on another thread that I do not care for the French President whereas I have come across many on this board that like him. The more I think about it, it is not the British wariness of the French but on moral grounds there is no doubt he is a womanizer who made a pact with a previous wife when elected for her to act as consort. This did not work out for whatever reasons and I suspect they were on both sides so he manages to persuade the girlfriend to marry him. The morals of an ally cat seems to be phrase that comes to mind.
I can remember as a teenager the consternation in Britain that the US might pick a President (Reagan) that had been divorced and that Britain might have a PM (Thatcher) who was married to a man who had been divorced, my how times have changed and incidentally of course those 2 people were the best leaders for their countries for decades and many say in their living memory.
