“’Please kill me,’ pleads man accused in beheading murder”
“Warning: This story contains disturbing details released in court proceedings.”
Mike McIntyre , Winnipeg Free Press
Published: Tuesday, August 05, 2008

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Li came to Canada in 2001. He lived in Winnipeg for several years before leaving his wife and moving to Edmonton.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “He had been exhibiting “bizarre and unusual behaviour” in recent weeks and months which included taking sudden bus trips to various cities in Canada for no apparent reason, said Dalmyn.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Only hours before Li allegedly beheaded McLean, Li was reportedly sitting peacefully on a bench in Erickson, Man., haggling with a local teen over the price of his laptop.

The mother of 15-year-old Darren Beatty, Dorothy Beatty, said police seized a laptop belonging to the accused killer after Darren bought it from Li Wednesday morning - 150 kilometres away from, and only hours before McLean’s gruesome death.

Dorothy Beatty said her son saw Li multiple times Tuesday and Wednesday - from discussing a severely discounted price for the laptop, then returning twice later to pay the man $60 in cash and getting the laptop’s password.

Dorothy said her son was not threatened by Li’s presence on a Main Street park bench in the idyllic 500-person town.

The laptop contained school schedules, job resumes, e-mails written in Chinese and innocuous nature photos, said Dorothy and Maurice Beatty, after the couple perused the laptop’s contents to ensure no smutty X-rated material was there.

“The pictures were of planes and mountains, and I think pictures of B.C.,” said Dorothy Beatty.”

“Kidnappings and Flooding Leave Northeast India in Turmoil”

Gospel for Asia
For Immediate Release

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “NORTHEAST INDIA (ANS) — From kidnapped children in Manipur to flooding in Assam, the Northeast corner of India is in a state of unrest and upheaval.

At least 24 children have been reported missing in Manipur, and police think this number might be even higher.

It is believed that a rebel group has been kidnapping the children to make them child soldiers. Although the militants claim that they are simply recruiting the children and that the children join of their own free will, most believe that the group is abducting them.

In light of these events, some parents have stopped sending their children to school by themselves, and school authorities have decided that parents must pick their children up when school lets out.”

Press Release A080805a-271
August 5, 2008

Precision operation detains suspected Samarra AQI leader
BAGHDAD – Coalition forces captured four wanted men and detained 11 additional suspects during operations in central and northern Iraq Tuesday targeting al-Qaeda leaders and their liaisons.

Coalition forces conducted a precision operation and captured a wanted man near Samarra. The man is believed to oversee attacks in the area and reportedly replaced another AQI suspect who was detained during an operation Jul. 22.

Coalition forces captured two wanted men assessed to be part of the AQI network in Sharqat, south of Mosul. The two operations, in Mosul and farther south in Bayji, netted five additional suspected terrorists.

In Baghdad, Coalition forces captured a wanted man who was reportedly visiting Iraq before departing to conspire with his foreign terrorist facilitation contacts outside the country. He and one additional suspect were detained in a house that appeared to be set up as a transient location.

Coalition forces also targeted members of a car-bombing network in Baghdad and detained one suspected terrorist.

Information from an operation Jul. 31 helped Coalition forces target an AQI liaison in Mosul, where they detained four suspected terrorists.

Coalition forces destroy weapons caches in Lake Thar Thar region

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces discovered and destroyed two weapons caches during a mission ending Aug. 2 to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations near Lake Thar Thar in central Iraq.

Intelligence reports indicate the Lake Thar Thar region is used by AQI leaders and operatives as a transit route, safe haven, and training area for foreign terrorists brought into Iraq. Coalition forces conducted a methodical 72-hour security sweep of the area and discovered two weapons caches.

One of the caches contained several rifles, pistols and armor-piercing ammunition. Coalition forces destroyed the weapons on site. Another cache, hidden behind false walls in a building, contained more than 10,000 rounds of various ammunition and bomb-making materials. Coalition forces called for supporting aircraft, which destroyed the building and cache inside.

“Our efforts continue to remove the weapons used for terrorism in order to bring greater security and prosperity to the people in Iraq,” said Navy Lt. David Russell, MNF-I spokesman.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 666-08
August 06, 2008
Detainee Convicted Of Terrorism Charge At Military Commission Trial

A military panel announced today that Salim Ahmed Hamdan of Yemen was found guilty of providing material support to terrorism by a military commission under the Military Commissions Act of 2006. Hamdan was found guilty on five of eight specifications of material support to terrorism, numbers 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8. He was found not-guilty by the panel members (jury) on the charge of conspiracy.

Now that Hamdan has been found guilty of these offenses, the commission will determine an appropriate sentence. Based on the crime for which he has been convicted he faces the maximum sentence of life in prison.

Hamdan’s conviction at trial is one step in the military commission process. After the trial is complete his case will receive an automatic review by the Convening Authority, who will evaluate the legal sufficiency of the findings and appropriateness of the sentence. Hamdan will still be represented by counsel and have the opportunity to submit matters for consideration on his behalf. Then his case will receive an automatic review by the Court of Military Commission Review. Thereafter, he could appeal to the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and the Supreme Court.

Trials by military commission demonstrate that the United States is committed to holding dangerous terror suspects accountable for their actions. Military commissions provide a mechanism to serve justice to those accused of law of war violations while keeping the United States, friends and allies safe from those determined on carrying out attacks on civilian populations and coalition forces.

Military commissions are constituted courts, affording all the necessary judicial guarantees which are recognized as indispensable by civilized peoples for purposes of Common Article 3 of the Geneva Convention.

A link to Hamdan’s list of charges can be viewed on the Military Commission Web site at

SENTENCING OF DRUG SMUGGLER “PERFECT OPPORTUNITY” FOR PRESIDENT TO INTERVENE IN BORDER AGENT CASE

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) responded to the sentencing of Osvaldo Aldrete Davila, the drug smuggler whose testimony led to the convictions of Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, by calling it a “perfect opportunity” for the President to pardon the agents or commute their sentences. Davila was sentenced today to two consecutive, 57 month terms in prison.

“The sentencing of Osvaldo Aldrete Davila offers the President yet another opportunity to do what is right and either pardon or commute the sentences of Agents Ramos and Compean,” said Congressman Hunter. “These agents have spent almost two years in federal custody because of Davila’s testimony. The fact that Davila continued to run drugs into the United States after receiving immunity from federal prosecutors, in exchange for taking the stand against the agents, calls into question his testimony. His sentencing discredits it altogether.

“Agents Ramos and Compean should be released immediately and returned to their families. They shouldn’t have to serve one more day in custody.”

NOTE: Hunter and several other Members of Congress recently sent a letter to President Bush requesting that he consider, at the very least, commuting the sentences of Agents Ramos and Compean to time served. Congressman Hunter also introduced H.R. 563 in the House of Representatives, legislation initiating a pardon for the agents. The bill currently has 104 cosponsors.
