Coalition forces destroy weapons caches in Lake Thar Thar region

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces discovered and destroyed two weapons caches during a mission ending Aug. 2 to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations near Lake Thar Thar in central Iraq.

Intelligence reports indicate the Lake Thar Thar region is used by AQI leaders and operatives as a transit route, safe haven, and training area for foreign terrorists brought into Iraq. Coalition forces conducted a methodical 72-hour security sweep of the area and discovered two weapons caches.

One of the caches contained several rifles, pistols and armor-piercing ammunition. Coalition forces destroyed the weapons on site. Another cache, hidden behind false walls in a building, contained more than 10,000 rounds of various ammunition and bomb-making materials. Coalition forces called for supporting aircraft, which destroyed the building and cache inside.

“Our efforts continue to remove the weapons used for terrorism in order to bring greater security and prosperity to the people in Iraq,” said Navy Lt. David Russell, MNF-I spokesman.
