An earthquake is now rocking the Southern California area. (I'm near Dodger Stadium)
As I post this, the USGS has not yet determined the epicenter so click on the link above for the exact location and magnitude from the USGS.
Here are the maps for California and Los Angeles:

Here's the historical review of the last seven days:
First real sense of the seriousness of Northridge for me came when I rushed to my workplace in Burbank and the security people flagged me down and told me not to park near anything that could fall on me. I was pretty much in auto-mode until then.
LA County Fire forming up Earthquake Strike Team....
They moved to Yorba Linda because, their last home was destroyed in the Whittier Narrows quake.
Any damage down there besides the WOWs!?
Shep: the President is to give a speach. I don’t know if he will say anything about the quake.
(I guess Shep has been left out of the White House to FNC pipeline :))
My wife and I experienced a pretty stiff aftershock in a Costco once. As you are aware, the warehouse style shelving goes up three or four levels (I forget which). At any rate, the shelving at the top was swaying about one point five to two feet in each direction, making for about three to four feet of sway.
Needless to say, we vacated the ends of the shelving immediately and moved away from them in general after that.
There were shopping carts full of goods sitting around where folks had bolted and never came back. My wife and grinned and went about checking out, which we were ready to do anyway.
Earthquakes generally aren’t that big of a deal. We have defended against them fairly well.
Shelving like that should be immobilized better.
she may be a lesbian but she is one hell of a seismologist
Really FELT that here in Eagle Rock!! Felt like two quakes in one... first a jolt, and small shaking and then a larger jolt and more intense. My mirrors were swaying!!!
Haven’t felt any of the after shocks...

‘waves moving through earth visible with naked eye’ sounds very scary to me...
Not sure, but Chrissy Mathews said he felt a tingle go up his leg...
Any damage down there besides the WOWs!?
The sound waves above ground propagate faster thane the shockwaves underground, so an observer outdoors or indoors near an open window will often hear an oncoming roar a few seconds before they feel the shaking.
Had that happen to me once in Anaheim Hills. The rushing sound was echoing all across the Santa Ana Canyon, then the place got a good rattle as the shockwave passed, then the sound died away as the wavefront continued on.
True. I was in the 6.6 earthquake in Eureka, CA in 1954. Knocked me off my bike with bricks flying from the chimneys. Quite a ride.
No kidding. She has been on for decades. I love my job but I wish I had hers. :)

Don;t forget Senator McCarthy, OOOOPS!!!! Sorry — he was the last-half-of-the-last-century’s favorite whipping boy.
I’m glad she’s ok. My brother and my niece reported in too. I have my sister in law up here taking a tour of the Fresno and the foothills!
Tony V as you call that guy is Obama lite wannabe.
Lucy Jones is good to she came in one time with her kids in tow>might have been Northridge
