Rapid changes in the churning movement of Earth's liquid outer core are weakening the magnetic field in some regions of the planet's surface, a new study says.
"What is so surprising is that rapid, almost sudden, changes take place in the Earth's magnetic field," said study co-author Nils Olsen, a geophysicist at the Danish National Space Center in Copenhagen.
The findings suggest similarly quick changes are simultaneously occurring in the liquid metal, 1,900 miles (3,000 kilometers) below the surface, he said.
The swirling flow of molten iron and nickel around Earth's solid center triggers an electrical current, which generates the planet's magnetic field.
The study, published recently in Nature Geoscience, modeled Earth's magnetic field using nine years of highly accurate satellite data.

When I was working in Ecuador I had some time to kill in Quito and took a cab to the equator monument...I really was looking for a toilet to flush to see what would happen.
don't know if that's true or not, but it's largely irrelevant. The location of the north and south *magnetic* poles changes over time, and so does the direction a compass points at any given physical location.
Turns out, it's not true. London, very near to Greenwich, declination is 1 deg 52 minutes. At Mecca it is 2 degrees 51 minutes.
Ash Hat Lying Moose Limb.
I'll have to admit to that. I read it... oh... 20 years ago at least, and I still remember it. It wasn't a particularly well-written story, IMHO, but I found the central idea to be striking.
I agree. The background plot is terrible, but it puts pieces together to an unsolved geology puzzle. I scraped my pennies together and bought two copies — one hardback in excellent condition to keep and one paperback to share with friends who would not buy their own copy. I think it’s time to re-read it.
Microwaves with the turntables are OK as long as they reverse direction.
Elevators, lifting mass straight up, apply a Coriolis torque to the crust and can cause earthquakes if too many ascend at once.
These are all problems of Industrial Capitalism, and will go away once Industrial Capitalism has been replaced by Social Justice.
The planets magnets field reversal isn’t all that worrisome, but it’s ability to shield us from big space born “stuff” while in transition IS!
That theory is not supported by core samples from the poles and elsewhere.
Which theory? How should core samples support whichever theory?

[snip] The twisting effect of the Coriolis force is real and does influence certain large things like the movement of air masses, but the effect is so small that it plays no role in determining the direction in which water rotates as it exits from a draining sink or toilet. [end]
