“The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditional lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.”

Interestingly, DU is treating this positively so far...has hell frozen over? There's several more Heller discussions over at DU on their Guns forum.
DU has a very vocal pro-gun clique that dominates their gun forums.

What is more, in all six other provisions of the Constitution that mention the people, the term unambiguously refers to all members of the political community, not an unspecified subset.

McCain won’t pick the next USSC justices,
the Judiciary Committee of the Senate will.

I've been lurking over there on the gun control threads. It seems as though there are more DUmmies for the 2nd than against. Shocked the hell out of me.

That language is even better than what I had hoped for. You ain't kiddin! I am not a gun nut by any means, don't own one, don't really like them much, but I do believe in the RTKBA. The logic in this decision is exactly what we here have been saying all along. It is a thing of beauty.

The downside for me is that my wife will say, “see, you don’t need to worry as much, so no more buying new guns every month.”

Well, they go to the courts when they can't win at the ballot box.
No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government

It's healthy for a government to be a bit afraid of its citizenry.

In dissent, Justice John Paul Stevens wrote that the majority "would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the Framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials wishing to regulate civilian uses of weapons." He said such evidence "is nowhere to be found."
Where was he looking?

those used by the militia, i.e., those in common use for lawful purposes. That's not what the militia means. The "militia" INCLUDED privateers, such that a member of the seaborne militia might own a fully gunned Man of War. That is, the second includes the right to own ALL armament.
But now, here is Heller. Happy pop-gunning.
