Justice Antonin Scalias opinion for the majority stressed that the Court was not casting doubt on long-standing bans on gun possession by felons or the mentally retarded, or laws barring guns from schools or government buildings, or laws putting conditions on gun sales.

Before digging into the opinion, written by shooter Justice Scalia, it appears that Scalia was willing to stick to his guns and do without the votes of a couple liberals it would have taken to reach a larger majority. He probably made it only as liberal as needed to get the 5th swing vote (Kennedy). Keep in mind that whether a decision is split or unanimous has no bearing on its effect as law of the land.

Or, to say the same thing another way:
Does anyone want to try to make the case that “it doesn’t matter who’s President”?

5-4. Scalia wrote the majority opinion. There were two dissenting opinions. Obviously we know who the statist dissenters are.

Was this a small step or a giant leap?Giant leap...... AP reporting the decision goes further than the Bush administration was asking for!! WOO HOO!!!

I think all of us would buy Heller a steak right now, along with 5 of the Justices. A steak, a cigar and a whiskey.

The whining and cursing on DU has already begun. One poster has stated that this will decrease our average life expectancy by a few years.

I don’t know the political leanings of most of the FNC news people these days — but both the field reporter (live at SCOTUS) and Megyn Kelly (hottie FNC host) seemed to exhibit restrained glee announcing this decision!

Can you imagine the liberals reaction and how the 4 idiots on the Scotus would have ruled if it had been some other constitutional right??
Imagine: "Washington DC bans free speech in order to help combat crime" or "Washington DC bans the 4th amendment in order to help combat crime"

I dont recall his name right now but they guy who paid for this case needs to be thanked. He should never have to buy a steak for the rest of his life. Big bump to that. The irony is that this case was funded and pushed by a libertarian with his own funds if I'm not mistaken.

5-4. It just shows to us who the ultimate enemies are on the bench, those GD liberal judges. It shows how close we are to losing our country. If Obama gets in, it’ll be 9-0 votes in favor of the liberals perpetually.
