WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate John McCain admitted on Saturday it can be difficult at times to be proud of the United States.
Ill admit to you that its tough in some respects, McCain said when asked by a questioner at a town hall meeting how to be proud of the country.
We have not always done things right and we mismanaged the war in Iraq very badly for nearly four years.
McCains wife, Cindy, pounced on Michelle Obama, the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama, for saying in February that she was proud of her country for the first time in my adult life.
The Arizona senator said it was important for the United States to be more humble and inclusive.

I'm not going to debate Rosie O'donald who thinks the republicans brought in all the latinos and took down the twin towers. ...end of discussion.
When you get your head out of that commie Lou Dobbbs behind, give me a ping.
“I am furious at this country and Bush for what its done to our Serbian allies. My husband just got back and they hate us for what weve done to them. Backing our arch enemies and betraying our friends? Are you proud of that? Im not.”
No? John McCain is. He insisted on sending our ground troops to Kosovo, said we weren’t being aggressive enough. Remember?
He also is getting big $$ from the Albanian lobby.

‘’These bombs are not going to do the job,’’ said Senator John McCain of Arizona, a Republican who was a naval pilot in the Vietnam War. ‘’It’s almost pathetic. You’re just going to solidify the determination of the Serbs to resist a peace agreement.
‘’You’d have to drop the bridges and turn off the lights in Belgrade to have even a remote chance of changing Milosevic’s mind,’’ he said. ‘’What you’ll get is all the old Vietnam stuff, bombing pauses, escalation, negotiations, trouble.’’
“Many Republicans have criticized the Democrat president for a failure of resolve over the Kosovo crisis and in other earlier foreign policy crises like Bosnia and Iraq.Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who spent more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, insists the United States should be preparing its troops for a ground war in case that option became necessary.McCain was one of a number of members of Congress travelling to Brussels and Aviano, Italy with Defense Secretary William Cohen in the next three days to meet top NATO leaders and visit U.S. forces involved in the operations.”

I didn't say anything about patriotism. I merely stated McCain's decisions (i.e. the way he is running this campaign) is an appeal to moderates, which is where his support has always been.
I myself am Independent, though I registered GOP to vote in the primaries. However, I'm not a moderate. I was hoping for Thompson, but by the time the primary reached my state, I had only Romney to vote for.
You guys are like a broken record. I am well aware of McCain’s stand. I am not proud of my Country’s stand on this issue. That is all I’m saying. Our Country has picked its side...and it’s the wrong one.
His quotes were taken out of context. He meant that it’s tough because there are so many anti-Americans who think it’s foolish to be patriotic. He didn’t mean that there were blemishes on America that make it difficult to love your country.
Does the GoP really want its war wagon hooked to this (insert your choice word here)!
Why do both parties hate this country so much?
“You guys are like a broken record. “
No, McCain is like a broken record,Hildy. You used Kosovo as an excuse to defend McCain. He destroyed that with his own words. I can’t help that. Support the old fool, it’s your business, but don’t make excuses for him that he can’t defend.
The forum isn't what's embarrassing, it's the choice of candidates that's embarrassing and pathetic, followed by Republican efforts to make the best of a bad thing by chastising anyone who points out McCain's many efforts to undermine the philosophies many here hold dear. It's too bad McCain can't drop out and give his nomination to someone else.
Personally, I want to believe that McCain is better than Obama and he is, sort of. If I have, say, 10 important issues to base my vote on, Obama gets 0 of the 10, whereas McCain gets 1 (war on terror) with maybe two more possible (supreme court and taxes). That should be enough to get my vote, but...he's said and done so many things that make me not trust him or even fear what he might do in office, that it's very possible he could be almost as bad as Obama.
I used to be a PollyAnna too - then, sadly, I woke up = and it was largely Freepers in the last few months that opened my eyes...Even FR has become saturated with Sheeple....
Here's an example: I was referred to this thread by a poster responding to one of my posts in another thread. Follow this back and you'll see why I just about give up on FR - it ain't what it used to be.
read the posters response to me and then my post he/she was referring too.

The people we broke away from in the old country were "purists" and we all thought they s*cked eggs back then. What happened?
Republicans used to be about preserving what the founders laid down, a Republic of all the people. Dems have placed us in parallel opposite camps for too long. I reject it, I won't be catorgorized at the whim of the corrosive elites or the Clintons of the world, nor the rabid one issue voters that would sell our country down the river like a whining spoiled child.
I'm part of the new old time Republicans now. The original ideas still stand! I'll be looking forward to the forth this year more than ever. We have held onto our flag of freedom for all while the rest of the western world is being enslaved. God has really Blessed us all.
I think that McCain called himself part of the “bad bunch” - playboy works too. It is womanizing either way. Take away his first wife’s Mercedes and we’ll see how much she adores him.
As for judges, “bad bunch” works equally well for judges. Recall that McCain voted to confirm Ginsberg.
Not every woman is a Hillary Clinton.
For the last time I did not use Kosovo to defend McCain. I used it as an example of how there are times I am not proud of this country. I do not know how many more ways I can say it.
I find it difficult to be proud of my elected officials most of the time.
Contemporary republican politics are easy compared to the self-discipline required of conservatism.
OK, I’m a liberal. Crazieman.
I a PROUD to be a CONSERVATIVE, and it is tough to vote Republican, IMPOSSIBLE to vote RINO or for the RINO relic.
Cannot dump McCain any longer. In the last couple primaries he finally reached the point where enough delegates are legally bound to vote for him to win on the first ballot.
