John McCain said Friday that the Supreme Court ruling on Guantanamo Bay detainees is “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.” The presumptive GOP nominee said the decision, a 5-4 ruling Thursday that determined Guantanamo detainees have the right to seek release in civilian courts, would lead to a wave of frivolous challenges. “We are now going to have the courts flooded with so-called … habeas corpus suits against the government, whether it be about the diet, whether it be about the reading material. And we are going to be bollixed up in a way that is terribly unfortunate because we need to go ahead and adjudicate these cases,” he said at a town hall meeting in New Jersey. McCain said he has worked hard to ensure the U.S. military does not torture prisoners but that the detainees at Guantanamo are still “enemy combatants.” “These are people who are not citizens. They do not and never have been given the rights that citizens in this country have,” he said. “Now, my friends, there are some bad people down there. There are some bad people.” Barack Obama released a statement Thursday saying the Supreme Court decision “ensures that we can protect our nation and bring terrorists to justice while also protecting our core values.” “The Court’s decision is a rejection of the Bush administration’s attempt to create a legal black hole at Guantanamo - yet another failed policy supported by John McCain,” he said. “This is an important step toward re-establishing our credibility as a nation committed to the rule of law and rejecting a false choice between fighting terrorism and respecting habeas corpus.”

No I can’t. I can show you where he stated he wanted to close Gitmo on the first day of his Presidency. It was only speculation from there where they would wind up.

And I've no doubt we could all agree with the first clause of your statement: McCain (and all of us on this thread) has always wanted the Gitmo prisoners' cases processed ASAP.

But, then, McCain wants to close Gitmo. Why? And where would he imprison any future captors from then WOT? Or, in his mind, will there be no more?
See, it's not the issue of prosecuting those prisoners who are there now: Interrogate, drain dry, dispose of as necessary.
Instead, the issue with McCain has been "Close Gitmo...and do what?". Are we to stop prosecuting the WOT? Or are we to bring the prisoners to then continental US -- where they might have been subject to the same kind of horseshit SCOTUS decision as came down?
Or do they get renditioned...???

I appreciate you stepping in there. I had seen that video, but couldn’t remember it. I’ve tried to sit down and document this guy, but when it gets down to it, it wouldn’t matter.
He’s not Obama, and that’s all they need to know.

But the problem for McCain is even when he advocates for some thing sensible he does things that do the opposite. McCain-Finegold, McCain-Liberman, McCain-Kennedy.

LaRaza may be a bunch of nutcases like you state, but apparantly McCain believes that they are mainstream. LaRaza and LaMecha are no different, in alot of ways from the KKK or the black panthers, its all about race, hate and division. For McCain to repeatedly speak at this racist convention says alot about him, his beliefs and the direction of his policies.

As to what to do with future ones? I am not 100% on where he stands on that but I think he wants them in the prison of Fort Leavenworth. Do not quote me on that though.
I love Gitmo, but do see it as a chew bone for liberals. I don't have the answer for the last part of your question.

Worse, this could overturn the Bin Laden chauffeur case. It will get a habeas corpus hearing - minimum. So it mattered not if the prosecution happened or not. Once the detainees hit US soil this whole thing ends up in federal court. That is why they were in GITMO. Classic McCain. He wants one outcome and does things that produce the opposite. It's a pattern and it is crazy.

The reason we had GITMO was to avoid Habeas Corpus and all that entails for the terrorists. The SCOTUS grants Habeas Corpus. Closing GITMO does the same thing. Once they hit US soil they are subject to US Constitutional protection. I think the case is Jackson v something. I could look it up.
So if you close GIMTO you are doing the one thing the court did. It is classic McCain.
He said the a parallel stupid thing in about transparency of markets recently (yesterday?). He wants international markets to be more transparent. So he passes more disclosure laws and sends regulators all over companies as if SarbOx was not bad enough. What happens? More and more trading goes off shore. Stupid is as stupid does.

I still the think the way to do that is straight on, not by electing a socialist to create a backlash that will never happen. We just need to work harder to educate people, on a one-to-one basis if need be. I wore myself out this morning with some half-educated leftist, but who knows, something might have stuck in his little brain. And we need to just work harder on the more public fronts as well (sending money to the right people, etc.).
I don’t think the guards at the federal prisons will like it either, as they get attacked daily by feral loons. But we can do it. We’ve done harder things. Besides, maybe we can let them give citizenship classes now.
