WARREN, Mich. -- Police said 20 to 30 men who brutally attacked and robbed a motorist Saturday night may also be responsible for several other violent crimes that took place the same day.
Four people were taken into custody for questioning after a motorist was beaten unconscious.
Police said the incident took place when Andy Kauffman, 29, and his wife, Angelina, were driving on North River Road when more than two dozen men wearing ball caps and baggy shorts spread out across the street and blocked traffic.
Kauffman tried to drive past them and someone threw a brick in his window. Kauffman stopped his car and got out to see what happened.
"At that point at least 12 of the subjects jumped on him, beating and kicking him several times to the point where he was unconscious," Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said. "A second man then got out of the car and also was attacked, but not nearly as bad as the first individual."
A short time later, police were called to a gas station nearby for a fight.
A man who was using the pay phone was beaten. He was not seriously injured, police said.
Police said there were several incidents within a few hours and they fear the same group of attackers was involved.

Just go away and bother someone else. Anyone who still has temper tantrums and/or drives a Saab needs more help than they are going to get here.

If you are concerned about the exposed hammer, take a look at a shrouded or concealed hammer.
This is a S&W 642 just like the one I carry daily. The hammer is completely enclosed in the frame. I have added a Hogue Monogrip on mine to absorb some of the recoil and to provide better control.

The funny thing is that I prefer-hammer fired semi's over striker-fired for CCW (although I do have an XD in the collection).

Exactly correct.

I popped a few .38s in my Python. They were pretty mild compared to .357s, for sure...

Is that model “double-action only” or does it have the little “nub” slider for SA?

Is that model double-action only or does it have the little nub slider for SA? The S&W 642 (Centennial frame) is DA with no access to the hammer. For a shrouded hammer with the nub (Bodyguard frame) take a look at the model 638 (.38+P) and 649 (.357/.38+P).

I was just curious because I've heard Clint say the same thing. He's a great teacher and has a quirky but infectious sense of humor. The best instructors don't necessarily tell you what to do, they tell you how to decide what to do.
Either way, youre keeping good company.

Because I live in the People’s Republic of New Jersey, I have minimal gun rights. Were I to apply for a CCW I’d have a 99.9 % percent chance of it being rejected by the local chief of police for “lack of need.” That being said, if surrounded by a bunch of neer’ do wells, I’d aim my truck at the biggest bastard in the bunch, and give em’ a nice Mopar tattoo. Afterwards, when I got arrested for a hate crime, I’d request a trial by jury, because I sure as $hit wouldn’t trust a locally elected NJ judge.

“I also use a slightly de-tuned .357 mag hand-load with good results.”
I agree a hand loaded detuned .357 does increase the muzzle control, but I would shy away from hand loads for possible SD use. My reasoning being if it ends up in court and some ADA trying to make a name for himself would use that fact (handloaded) to tip a firearms ignorant jury against you. Think Nifong. To each his own but that is my reasoning for better or worse.

...more than two dozen men wearing ball caps and baggy shorts spread out across the street and blocked traffic.
No doubt these are more of those dreaded Amish gangsters we've been hearing about! I'm sure that their horses and buggies were hidden somewhere nearby!
The biggest mistake I see here is that the idiot driver STOPPED after one of the Amish Gangstas threw the brick... sheesh...
Outside of 20 feet? 15 feet is considered an "imminent danger zone". If a potential assailant is at or closer than 15 feet, you better have your weapon ready to use. But we practice this one drill that involves retrieving a weapon and using it before an assailant can overtake you.
It works like this. First, UNLOAD the weapon and be CERTAIN that it's unloaded! Take the magazine out of it! We run this drill on grass because it's "rough" and you can get skinned up.
Your "assailant" is at least 50 feet behind you. You turn and start walking away while the assailant keeps pace. At this point, your weapon is stowed where you usually carry it. The goal is for the assailant to reach you before you can retrieve the weapon and "use it".
We started this little "game" at 30 feet and most quickly realized that they were woefully unprepared to retrieve their weapon and use it. My 13 yr old studied "some" martial arts and disarming techniques mainly used against edged and blunt weapons, but he took three handguns away from grown men that day. He simply ran up to them, and before they could react, he put them "down" and took their guns away. Every one after the first swore that it wouldn't happen to him, but it did. He did it to me a couple of times, but I'm a better runner than him. :-)
We also run a similar drill in the house. The weapon is next to you, and you have to pick it up and "use it" before somebody across the room can get out of a chair and come get up "close". It's very, VERY difficult to do.
20 feet (IMHO) is way, WAY too close. 50 feet is extremely dangerous with younger faster people.
The one thing our LEO instructor did tell us which I'll never forget is that IF your assailant is retreating, do NOT shoot him! He said that holes in the back of your assailant are always looked on unfavorably by the investigating LEOs. :-)
If you're interested, we do a "live" drill that's like the ones I described above. You have to rig a line over a couple of posts about 100 feet apart. We've done this with posts and clothes line, some wire, and cardboard.
The concept is to make a target that you can pull along the clotheslines. We stick center mass targets on the cardboard. You attach a 70ft (or so) piece of string to the little pulleys on the top of your target frame (can use a strip of 1"x1") and get a helper to run while holding onto the string.
You stand with your back to the target which is at the far end of the clothes lines. You stand somewhere between the poles which support the lines. You want to be looking at one pole, and the other (along with the sliding target) will be behind you. Your weapon is stowed, or in your hand. Your helper runs past you while pulling the string, which is attached to the top of the target, and the target moves toward you at least as fast as your helper was running. Any time after your helper passes you, you can turn and fire. This one is one of our favorites. :-) It's fun, and is good practice. Just be careful and don't shoot your helper! :-)

Im afraid I’ll have to utilize whatever ammunition is in the weapon at the time I need to use it.
I USUALLY only “carry” with weapons loaded with factory ammo, but...

I don’t know how it works (or whether he’s full of shiite) but IF it can be done, I HOPE it cuts both ways.
That is, if HE “blocks” my posts to him, then any HE makes to me should not show up on my ping list either. Otherwise, FreeRepublic is wide open for one party to be able to seriously harass another, with the harassed party having no recourse.
In any case, it won’t hurt my feelings if I NEVER hear from that particular person again.

North River Road. Probably then Mt. Clemens. That is not the town I’d get out of my car in if someone tossed a brick in my window.
20 on 1 attack? Floor it and then call the cops.

“I hate to break the news to you but this has been the reality of race in America for a couple of decades now for those of us “whiteys” who live in high black population areas.”
Another interesting - but unrelated - thread initiated today can be found here:

Then again, maybe it’s not so “unrelated”.
Taken together, these two threads become a portent for the future.
