Subway, the sandwich restaurant, wants to hear your child's story – unless he or she is homeschooled.

The national chain's "Every Sandwich Tells a Story Contest" offers prizes and a chance to be published on the Subway website and in Scholastic's "Parent & Child" magazine but specifically excludes homeschoolers:

Subway contest

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied (sic) States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.

Subway's website promotion not only misspells "United" States, but offers the grand prize winner a "Scholastic Gift Bastket (sic) for your home."

The 2007 winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee was Evan O'Dorney, a 13-year old homeschool student from Danville, Calif.

Tortured? Can you explain? How does a homeschooling environment in which Children are taught by those that love them, at the speed in which they can handle it, while experiencing TRUE freedom from the earliest age count as torture? They are never bullied, beat-up, molested by teachers, forced to play with condoms, forced to digest years and years of the liberal mantra for 8+ hours each day. That is torture, pal.

Something happen to you?

Just recently compared the two, Quiznos and Subway, because of the advertised “$5 footlong” and found the Subway to be much more generous and varied (8-Subway, 4-Quiznos). Also, no sign of the contest so far in Virginia.

I feel the same way here in Buffalo, home of the chicken wing. Good pizza and wing joints abound here and any of their subs are better than the average Subway any day.

What a bunch of idiots”

For a company that got lots of good publicity with Jared losing so much weight and keeping it off for 10 years, this is beyond monumentally stupid.

This publicity company should be fired before Tuesday AM.

I have never had any sort of financial holdings in Subway or any other restaurant for that matter. I just like their food and like how they are operating in Iraq - that’s all.

Was tasked too sit in on a interview of a new engineer last week. She was home schooled and maxed her SAT’s, Graduated first in her class , was on the deans gold list and is working on certifications in specialized processes we need on her own time and budget. All on her own dollar. She paid her own way and didn’t get a dime from a scholarship or financial aid or loans. Worked two jobs and went too school at same time !

She started college at age 16 and finished a 6 year program in 4 years . We hired her . We’re also paying for the rest of her education . This little gal is going places and not a thing can stop her short of death IMO.

I don’t think I have ever met or worked with anyone that was home schooled that didn’t work hard and was more intelligent as well had people skills that seem to make them better managers of their own time the time of others.

Home schooled, scouting, prior military service, community service , and conservative values and the ability too tell someone too go to hell and have em ask you for directions will get you a job in our profession.

I deal with cross contamination a lot in my job and watching a sandwich being made at a Subway Shop was a one time affair for me and mine. Nasty damn operation.

She reminds me of my 18 yr old! He’ll finish his AAS at the local community college less than a yr from HS graduation... which is happening right about NOW. We administer standardized tests anually and the last time he scored above the 18 yr point (master’s degree). We take NO hand outs as well! You KNOW we homeschool though. :-) Maybe if he gets interested in ‘widgets’, I’ll send him to you! :-)

Our oldest home schooled child is no longer a child - she will be 26 this July. She graduated from Georgetown College (a Christian college here in Kentucky) with a 4.0 and then got a full scholarship to the University of Cincinnati where she also managed a 4.0 in grad school. While at Georgetown she was selected to attend a semester at Oxford University where she attended Regents Park College, one of the most conservative schools both academically and socially. CS Lewis and Tolkien taught there, in fact she used to hang out in the same pub they frequented.

She is now a full editor for F&W Publications in Cincinnati where she is now taking over the on-line publication line. Although she chose the “soft” science of art and humanities I am still proud of her as it shows what kids can do if they only exert themselves and do not wait around for a handout. If you promise not to get bored, here is a link to her thesis titled: Chaste Sexual Warrior, Civic Heroine, and Femme Fatale: Three Views of Judith in Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art. http://www.ohiolink.edu/etd/view.cgi?acc_num=ucin1147989193

Then maybe you would agree with me that the parents of home schooled children should file a discrimination suit against SubWay.

Or they could just suck it up and pretend to be normal.

My children are home educated, and I find the tenor of some of these responses embarrassing. I think that if you (not you personally, pilipo) believe homeschoolers should be allowed to participate in this context, it is appropriate to notify Subway of your opinion. If you want to take our business elsewhere, fine. The talk of discrimination is really stretching it. Subway is not the govt. We all discriminate. It’s a free country. We aren’t victims because we can’t participate in some cheezy context. I am sure all of our children have other opportunities to practice writing.
