The Change America Deserves
Rep. John Boehner's website ^ | May 16, 2008 | Rep. John Boehner

Posted on 05/20/2008 5:17:31 AM PDT by Eagle of Liberty

Washington is broken. You need look no further than $4 per gallon for gas to see how political gamesmanship in Washington is impacting your life. Two years ago, congressional Democrats promised “change” but what we’ve seen instead is business-as-usual.

Just recently, lawmakers in the U.S. House killed an effort to remove from the Farm Bill three special provisions that would benefit a ski resort in Vermont, the San Francisco salmon industry and forest fish in Montana. And congressional Democrats have just introduced yet another tax hike -- $54 billion on small businesses – to bankroll more Washington spending.

I don’t believe this was the change the American people were expecting, and it’s become increasingly clear that the promises made two years ago have been broken. The renowned journalist Edward R. Murrow once said, “Our major obligation is not to mistake slogans for solutions.” Middle class families are tired of political rhetoric, tired of politicians talking about what they’re going do and tired of seeing promise after promise broken for political expediency.

Seventeen months ago, House Republicans embarked on a new journey to revive the common-sense conservative principles that built our party up after years in the wilderness. These principles speak to families struggling to make ends meet after filling up their cars, workers concerned about their jobs remaining here and to those who believe that their elected officials just aren’t listening.

We are listening. And we’re responding with an agenda that addresses those concerns.

While this article seems to lay out a step in the right direction, I emailed Rep. Boehner to let him know that there are many that are done reading and hearing empty words. There are many with genuine trust issues with both parties and to gain that trust back, the Republicans better get very vocal through ACTIONS.

It's very hard for the minority to act. What do you prefer? That DemocRATS get a 2/3'rds supermajority in the House and at least 60 seats in the Senate after November?

After maintaining control of the House and Senate for almost a decade and blowing their opportunities to remake America time and again, I am not buying into their latest epiphany. They talk a good game and then proceed to load up every bill that comes before them with earmarks as if everyday is Christmas in D.C. I’ve had it with the whole bunch...

One point to make here. If the Pubs do suffer a seventy five seat thrashing and Obama wins, the country's fate will be entirely in the Democrats' hands (God forbid, but it's possible). You'll then see a replay of the Jimmy Carter era of expensive gas, declining international prestige and our President telling us what a rotten bunch we are for wanting to prosper, yada, yada.

The time will be ripe for the Dems to lose BIG in 2010, assuming the Pubs can get even a semblance of an act together. Of course, they are the Stupid Party, so they won't, but the conditions will be ripe if they were able to take advantage of it.

Sure it’s hard for a minority to act but what did they do when they were a majority? I’m tired of being “threatened” with the prospect of a Democrat 2/3 majority. If that’s what it takes to wake up this country (and especially the Republican Party) then so be it.

Well a lot of those RINO's lost. Should we punish all the conservative candidates that are running to try to regain the seats we lost in 2006?

Just sent Boehner the following message through his website:

I just finished reading your online letter about Change that America Deserves. Frankly, the problem the GOP faces today is of their own making.

The GOP has positioned itself as the nerdy sister of the Democrat Party. Instead of holding to its values of small government, minimal taxation and strong national defense, it has gone out of its way to bloat government spending, take seriously fraudulent issues such as global warming, and promote government interference in strictly economic issues such as health care.

The GOP positions itself as strong on the War on Terror, but has done little to seal our borders. Indeed, the assumptive GOP Presidential nominee is in favor of amnesty for illegals, and bows to the holy grail of global warming.

Senator McCain will not get my vote in November. I will be voting for my congressman (Donald Manzulo) as well as my state representatives, but there will be no check next to McCain's name. He is not what I expect the GOP to be. Conservatives like myself have not left the GOP; the GOP has left us commensurate with the Presidency of George W. Bush.

We don't need words, congressman. We need action. We need action that reflects strong, reasonable and sound conservative principles. Only then will those who have supported the GOP in the past begin to believe it has seen the light. Until then, the GOP may as well close its doors.

It likely won't do any good, but it felt good to unload on him :)

These "Principled Conservative Thumbsuckers" just want to punish the Republicans because the RATS will just ignore them and they really want the attention.

Right, and you are going to keep them out of power until they provide you with the action you are demanding!

Bright! Really, really bright!

You don’t like it, that’s your problem. Go ahead and vote for the RINOs as much as you like. You’re the reason we’re in this predicament. You’re the support they count on. Live with it.

Sounds good. Except that we'll be left saddled with all the socialist programs the Dems passed while they were in control. We all know that once such programs are put in place, they're never rescinded.

For God's sake, think about your logic! You are going to leave the Republicans out of power until they change the government.

You make absolutely no sense. Just like how the English would throw debtors into prision until they paid their debts!

Do you know any way to get them to see it from our perspective, except to get them out of the middle of it and standing where we are for a while?

Nicely done!

I, also, am mightily PO'd at our party!

~~~~~~~~~~~
However, I learned my lesson when I "sent a message" and voted for Perot -- and gave us eight years of the Clinton Arkansas Mafia.
When you say,
"I will be voting for my congressman (Donald Manzulo) as well as my state representatives, but there will be no check next to McCain's name."
that is no better than saying,
"When the enemy charged our position, I valiantly held my place in the trenches; but I refused to fire my rifle -- just to send a message to the REMFs..."
We are at war -- both internally and externally. To refuse to vote for our side in the internal war ("on principle") is the same cowardice as refusing to fight in the WOT. Please reconsider your childish pique and vote in opposition to the Democrats.
Don't be a deserter. Don't waste your vote. Don't let our position be overrun -- with ammo still in your weapon!
You are obviously a Republican Party backer. That’s fine. There are many like you. But most Freepers are conservatives FIRST, Republican second.
You believe in supporting the Republicans, regardless of their positions or effectiveness. Conservatives believe in supporting the Republicans WHEN they act on our principles and are effective.
You have been winning some battles. What you fail to understand is that you are losing the war.
Only force of habit keeps many voters in the Republican Party. Times they are a changing.
Washington is broken.
No sir. This is how government works. It is completely normal. That is why, for practical reasons, government needs to be minimized and used only where there is no alternative.
