BOULDER How liberal is the University of Colorado at Boulder? The campus hot-dog stand sells tofu wieners. A recent pro-marijuana rally drew a crowd of 10,000, roughly a third the size of the student body. And according to one professor's analysis of voter registration, the 800-strong faculty includes just 32 Republicans.
Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson surveys this landscape with unease. A college that champions diversity, he believes, must think beyond courses in gay literature, Chicano studies and feminist theory. "We should also talk about intellectual diversity," he says. So over the next year, Mr. Peterson plans to raise $9 million to create an endowed chair for what is thought to be the nation's first Professor of Conservative Thought and Policy.
Mr. Peterson's quest has been greeted with protests from some faculty and students, who say the move is too well, radical.
"Why set aside money specifically for a conservative?" asks Curtis Bell, a teaching assistant in political science. "I'd rather see a quality academic than someone paid to have a particular perspective." Even some conservatives who have long pushed for balance in academia voice qualms. Among them is David Horowitz, a conservative agitator whose book "The Professors: The 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America" includes two Boulder faculty members: an associate professor of ethnic studies who writes about the intersection of Chicano and lesbian issues, and a philosophy professor focused on feminist politics and "global gender justice."

These folks are upset about trying to get more political balance and call it “radical”, but they practically worshipped Ward Churchill, a real radical?

Of course only 10% of them were here in Earth at the time. ;)

Gee, affirmative action for a conservative? What is this world coming to?
CU does have a student Republican organization, but I bet they are pretty lonely!
“gay literature, Chicano studies and feminist theory”????? Now isn’t that a college you want on your resume? People of today must be really proud of Bolder.
RWP was a former FR fellow, may he RIP. He was once here, and, a bit, a wee wee bit, missed. But I’m guessing he’ll never leave the land of corn where he lives for the land of buffalo. Never.
And RWP, if you read this, again, my thanks for introducing me I. Kant’s First Imperative....; I would have never found out about his Dad, and those choices his Dad made, without your...ahem, encouragement.
Right Wing professor.. only 32 Republicans on the faculty? Since when dose a employer track political affiliations of its employees?
In my mind.. its no ones buisness that I am a registered Independent in my homestate but my own.
Affirmative Action for politics.. your right Dilbert San Diego.. whats the world comming to?
I smell something rotten. What CU is doing is attempting to shape the debate in a way that suits their liberal worldview. They will hire a nominal conservative who will then teach decidedly UN-conservative views. It’s all about smoke and mirrors and this is a propagandist trap.
How about hiring real professors with real degrees for engineering, math, hard sciences, medical school, business ...?
The pc stuff should be for off campus, not in the class rooms, and not using the taxpayers money for their liberal causes.
Oh, well, in that case, why the need for a new professor? All of your current professors are already quite adept at lecturing disparagingly about conservatives from a liberal perspective.
The left wouldn't sit still for this one minute. Why do our Republican leaders? Don't give me some pap about how we don't play by those rules. This has been outright surrender.
You know, we don't deserve to be the predominant force in this nation if we can't do better than this.
The other side talks about all out war, means it, and carries out that game plan. We talk of reaching out, do, and implement leftist policy after leftist policy.
Do we want to be successful or don't we? If we do, how can we put up with the caliber of leaders we do? It's time Conservatives put some generals in charge instead of some milk toast political pacifists.
We are poised to put a person who is a left of center Democrat in as our Presdent from the Republican side of the isle.
Just damn folks! What the hell...
I wonder if Mr. Bell realizes the irony of his statement.
I hear you George76. It seems liberals worship what is not real and despise what is real. If you want to see some real loonacy just look at the courses offered at Naropa University in Boulder. You will see courses like “Eco-poetics, the intersection of Marxism and poetry”. What kind of job are you qualified to do with a degree in stuff like that?
Forsooth. Wouldst per chance thou wanteth fries with thine lunch?
Here at Chez Mickey D's, twon't costeth thee a bunch.
“the nation’s first Professor of Conservative Thought and Policy”
I think they’ll hire Howard Zinn.
As I said on the other thread, I’ll volunteer. But I need a 300% raise from my current position.
