China Builds Up Military To Deter U.S. Help To Taiwan -Taipei

AIPEI (AFP)--China is building up its military defenses to deter U.S. intervention in case of war with Taiwan, the island's defense ministry said Monday.

Beijing is focusing on developing long-range missiles "to strike at American bases and battle carrier groups stationed in the Asia-Pacific...so as to block the United States from coming to the rescue of Taiwan should war break out in the Taiwan Strait," the ministry said in a report released Monday.

"Although the Chinese communists have claimed they would like to solve the Taiwan issues in a peaceful manner, they have asked their forces to step up preparation for military struggles against Taiwan," the report said.

We spend more on our military than all of the other nations of the world, combined. Yet we spend less now in GDP than we did in the 1950’s and 60’s. We could easily afford to double our defense spending if need be. Our technology is generations ahead of the others (i.e., Israel's raid on Syria last fall). Communist China is a paper tiger.

Oh, and btw, who will China sell all of their plastic junk and gee-gaws to if they’re at war with the United States?

Sorry for the length of this, but it's just too important...

"'We like your president. We want to see him reelected', former Chinese intelligence chief General Ji Shengde told Chinagate bagman Johnny Chung. Indeed, Chinese intelligence organized a massive covert operation aimed at tilting the 1996 election Clinton’s way."

From a 2003 Washington Post article:

"...a statement [Bill] Clinton made in February 2002, in which he told an audience in Australia, 'This is a unique moment in U.S. history, a brief moment in history, when the U.S. has preeminent military, economic and political power. It won't last forever. This is just a period, a few decades this will last.'

Clinton continued...

'In all probability, we won't be the premier political and economic power we are now' in a few decades, he said, pointing to the growth of China's economy and the growing economic strength of the European Union.

Whether the United States maintains its military supremacy, he said, depends in part on how much those other entities invest in their militaries, and Clinton said working cooperatively is essential to U.S. interests.

But he said he did not want to be misunderstood. 'I never advocated that we not have the strongest military in the world...I don't think a single soul has thought I was advocating scaling back our military.'

The Idiot's Guide to Chinagate

By Richard Poe
May 26, 2003

CHINA WILL LIKELY replace the USA as world leader, said Bill Clinton in a recent Washington Post interview. It is just a matter of time. Clinton should know. He has personally done more to build China’s military strength than any man on earth.

Most Americans have heard of the so-called "Chinagate " scandal. Few understand its deadly import, however. Web sites such as "Chinagate for Dummies" and its companion "More Chinagate for Dummies" offer some assistance. Unfortunately, with a combined total of nearly 8,000 words, these two sites – like so many others of the genre – offer more detail than most of us "dummies" can absorb.

For that reason, in the 600 words left in this column, I will try to craft my own "Idiot’s Guide to Chinagate," dedicated to all those busy folks like you and me whose attention span tends to peter out after about 750 words. Here goes.

When Bill Clinton took office in 1993, China presented little threat to the United States. Chinese missiles "couldn’t hit the side of a barn," notes Timothy W. Maier of Insight magazine. Few could reach North America and those that made it would likely miss their targets.

Thanks to Bill Clinton, China can now hit any city in the USA, using state-of-the-art, solid-fueled missiles with dead-accurate, computerized guidance systems and multiple warheads.

China probably has suitcase nukes as well. These enable China to strike by proxy – equipping nuclear-armed terrorists to do their dirty work, while the Chinese play innocent. Some intelligence sources claim that China maintains secret stockpiles of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons on U.S. soil, for just such contingencies.

In 1997, Clinton allowed China to take over the Panama Canal. The Chinese company Hutchison Whampoa leased the ports of Cristobal and Balboa, on the east and west openings of the canal respectively, thus controlling access both ways. A public outcry stopped Clinton in 1998 from leasing California’s Long Beach Naval Yard to the Chinese firm COSCO. Even so, China can now strike U.S. targets easily from their bases in Panama, Vancouver and the Bahamas.

How did China catch up so fast? Easy. We sold them all the technology they needed – or handed it over for free. Neither neglect nor carelessness are to blame. Bill Clinton did it on purpose.

As a globalist, Clinton promotes "multipolarity"– the doctrine that no country (such as the USA) should be allowed to gain decisive advantage over others.

To this end, Clinton appointed anti-nuclear activist Hazel O’Leary to head the Department of Energy. O’Leary set to work "leveling the playing field," as she put it, by giving away our nuclear secrets. She declassified 11 million pages of data on U.S. nuclear weapons and loosened up security at weapons labs.

Federal investigators later concluded that China made off with the "crown jewels" of our nuclear weapons research under Clinton’s open-door policy – probably including design specifications for suitcase nukes. Meanwhile, Clinton and his corporate cronies raked in millions.

In his book The China Threat, Washington Times correspondent Bill Gertz describes how the system worked. Defense contractors eager to sell technology to China poured millions of dollars into Clinton’s campaign. In return, Clinton called off the dogs. Janet Reno and other counterintelligence officials stood down while Lockheed Martin, Hughes Electronics, Loral Space & Communications and other U.S. companies helped China modernize its nuclear strike force.

"We like your president. We want to see him reelected," former Chinese intelligence chief General Ji Shengde told Chinagate bagman Johnny Chung. Indeed, Chinese intelligence organized a massive covert operation aimed at tilting the 1996 election Clinton’s way.

Clinton’s top campaign contributors for 1992 were Chinese agents; his top donors in 1996 were U.S. defense contractors selling missile technology to China.

Clinton received funding directly from known or suspected Chinese intelligence agents, among them James and Mochtar Riady who own the Indonesian Lippo Group; John Huang; Charlie Trie; Ted Sioeng; Maria Hsia; Wang Jun and others.

Commerce Secretary Ron Brown served as Clinton’s front man in many Chinagate deals. When investigators began probing Brown’s Lippo Group and Chinagate connections, Brown died suddenly in a suspicious April 1996 plane crash.

Needless to say, China does not share Clinton’s enthusiasm for globalism or multipolarity. The Chinese look out for Number One.

"War [with the United States] is inevitable; we cannot avoid it," said Chinese Defense Minister General Chi Haotian in 2000. "The issue is that the Chinese armed forces must control the initiative in this war." Bill Clinton has given them a good start.

Russia, China flex muscles in joint war games
Reuters: Aug 17, 2007

CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Russia and China staged their biggest joint exercises on Friday but denied this show of military prowess could lead to the formation of a counterweight to NATO.

"Today's exercises are another step towards strengthening the relations between our countries, a step towards strengthening international peace and security, and first and foremost, the security of our peoples," Putin said.

Fighter jets swooped overhead, commandos jumped from helicopters on to rooftops and the boom of artillery shells shook the firing range in Russia's Ural mountains as two of the largest armies in the world were put through their paces.

The exercises take place against a backdrop of mounting rivalry between the West, and Russia and China for influence over Central Asia, a strategic region that has huge oil, gas and mineral resources.

Russia's growing assertiveness is also causing jitters in the West. Putin announced at the firing range that Russia was resuming Soviet-era sorties by its strategic bomber aircraft near NATO airspace.

New Pentagon Report: China's Growing Military Space Power
By Leonard David
Special Correspondent, SPACE.com
March 6, 2008

GOLDEN, Colorado — A just-released Pentagon report spotlights a growing U.S. military concern that China is developing a multi- dimensional program to limit or prevent the use of space-based assets by its potential adversaries during times of crisis or conflict.

Furthermore, last year's successful test by China of a direct-ascent, anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon to destroy its own defunct weather satellite, the report adds, underscores that country's expansion from the land, air, and sea dimensions of the traditional battlefield into the space and cyber-space domains.

Although China's commercial space program has utility for non- military research, that capability demonstrates space launch and control know-how that have direct military application. Even the Chang'e 1 — the Chinese lunar probe now circling the Moon — is flagged in the report as showcasing China's ability "to conduct complicated space maneuvers — a capability which has broad implications for military counterspace operations."

Obama Pledges Cuts in Missile Defense, Space, and Nuclear Weapons Programs

February 29, 2008 :: News
MissileThreat.com

A video has surfaced of Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama talking on his plans for strategic issues such as nuclear weapons and missile defense.

The full text from the video, as released, reads as follows:

Thanks so much for the Caucus4Priorities, for the great work you've been doing. As president, I will end misguided defense policies and stand with Caucus4Priorities in fighting special interests in Washington.

First, I'll stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq. I'm the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president I will end it.[i.e. not win it]

Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.

I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.

I will not weaponize space.

I will slow our development of future combat systems.

And I will institute an independent "Defense Priorities Board" to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.

Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop new nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert, and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.

You know where I stand. I've fought for open, ethical and accountable government my entire public life. I don't switch positions or make promises that can't be kept. I don't posture on defense policy and I don't take money from federal lobbyists for powerful defense contractors. As president, my sole priority for defense spending will be protecting the American people. Thanks so much.

"unproven" missile defense systems???

Hey Barack, check THIS out!
(U.S. Dept of Defense video of shootdown of US spy satellite)

2007 Chinese anti-satellite missile test:
The 2007 Chinese anti-satellite missile test was conducted by China on January 11, 2007. A Chinese weather satellite — the FY-1C polar orbit satellite of the Fengyun series, at an altitude of 865 kilometres (537 mi), with a mass of 750 kg[1] — was destroyed by a kinetic kill vehicle traveling with a speed of 8 km/s in the opposite direction[2] (see Head-on engagement). It was launched with a multistage solid-fuel missile from Xichang Satellite Launch Center or nearby.

Obama Promises to Dismantle Our Armed Forces

YouTube has an undated 52-second clip of Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barrack Obama outlining his plans for America’s national defense. Obama’s presentation demonstrates either total naivete about important national security programs or he is just pandering for votes among the extreme left.

It’s a lot of saber rattling... The recent Taiwan elections were a landslide for the Nationalists whose platform called for much closer economic and social ties with China.

Additionally, this summer will see the first direct China-to-Taipei flights ever. Until now, you had to go through Hong Kong, Seoul, Incheon, or Tokyo. Now there will be direct flights from Shanghai to Taipei, a massive change in relations.

Make no mistake, Taiwan and China are moving towards unification on their own, saber rattling seems to be just the “thing” both sides have to do once in a while. Taiwan will end up as a “Special Administrative Region” a la Hong Kong, with nominal control by Beijing but essentially self-rule, an independent currency, and maintaining its own legal, economic, and personal rights system.

Since the fall of the USSR, and maybe before, most US policies are being made on the basis of the morality of business, and specifically our largest, international corporations. And, of course, that means no morality at all beyond the bottom line, maximize revenue and minimize costs.

So, selling critical technology to China is no problem for those following this amoral code, and exploiting the world’s cheapest labor, or breaking one immigration law after another to hire cheaper illegal alien labor within the US gives no pause to the businessman of post Cold War America. And there are plenty of politicians, including Clinton and Jorge Bush, willing to have the executive branch ignore it all.

Before, national defense considerations were some check on the profit motive, but that seems to be a thing of the past in more and more areas.

Imagine that!and the creeps in congress keep cutting the budget of the U.S. Air Force forcing them to cut manpower while at the same time refusing to eliminate Air Bases that are no longer wanted or needed.

They are also failing to provide the funding to get the F-22 Produced in quantities big enough to make it economical to build. Same goes with the F-35.

If we go to war with China over Taiwan which we are legally obligated to do to defend her from the Chicoms we will be in serious trouble.

The only effective way that China can capture Taiwan is to land enough forces there to infiltrate into the cities and dominate the Taiwanese. If they can achieve this, they will be almost impossible to dislodge. But given this as an axiom, several things can be deduced.

1) The US will have to be distracted, and the naval ports at Bremerton and San Diego will have to be neutralized. The Panama Canal will be closed by its Chinese management, and the Chinese Hutchinson-Whampoa deep water port in the Caribbean will be used to delay the US Atlantic Fleet. All 70+ Chinese submarines will be dispatched to attack US surface fleets and submarines. A weak US President may be an essential element of any attack.

2) They will have to have an enormous fifth column within Taiwan prior to the attack. The Chinese military will attempt to destroy the Taiwanese military, but the fifth columnists will be trying to seize control of the civilian authorities and sabotage essential infrastructure.

3) Much like WWIIs D-Day, a flotilla of military and civilian ships will need to transport a huge number of soldiers across the Taiwan Strait in a very precise timetable. They will anticipate winning with as much as 90% losses of these forces.

4) Once the attack is underway, the Chinese will initiate a full scale diplomatic effort to call any US intervention “aggressive war” against China.

Now, this being said, if these deductions are correct to some degree, the defensive posture of Taiwan is also clear, in such a manner as to defeat the invasion.

To start with, both anti-missile missile and laser defenses will try to prevent as many mainland missiles getting through as possible. Police authorities will try to quickly identify and neutralize fifth columnists. Air forces will try and prevent any airborne attack and try to establish air superiority.

A large portion of the Taiwan Strait could be mined with small naval mines designed more for use against civilian than military ships. While these will probably not sink many ships, they will significantly delay many. Floating with the current, they will cease to function after a given period of time.

The US Navy and the Taiwanese will be very busy sinking mainland submarines, though they may be willing to sacrifice boats to uncover the position of our submarines. Realistically, the US will probably lose one or more carriers. Major attacks will commence against mainland military forces.

You may be right, which is why I'm a little hesitant about providing Taiwan with any new weapons systems. Especially if it will just end up in Chinese hands.

I think the real danger is that China would wage war against one of several countries with which we have mutual defense treaties in the region, including South Korea, Japan and the Philippines, as well as countries with which we have good relations, including India, Vietnam and various Southeast Asian countries over territorial claims. The other problem with selling weapons to China has to do with China's unwillingness to abide by intellectual property agreements. We might find ourselves selling several aircraft to China and then finding out that they have built pirated copies in contravention of the sale agreements, much as China has done with Russian aircraft.
