It’s a lot of saber rattling... The recent Taiwan elections were a landslide for the Nationalists whose platform called for much closer economic and social ties with China.

Additionally, this summer will see the first direct China-to-Taipei flights ever. Until now, you had to go through Hong Kong, Seoul, Incheon, or Tokyo. Now there will be direct flights from Shanghai to Taipei, a massive change in relations.

Make no mistake, Taiwan and China are moving towards unification on their own, saber rattling seems to be just the “thing” both sides have to do once in a while. Taiwan will end up as a “Special Administrative Region” a la Hong Kong, with nominal control by Beijing but essentially self-rule, an independent currency, and maintaining its own legal, economic, and personal rights system.

You may be right, which is why I'm a little hesitant about providing Taiwan with any new weapons systems. Especially if it will just end up in Chinese hands.
