According liberals, they are tolerant, open-minded, sensitive to complexity and nuance, and wary of simplistic explanations. So why is a column by the liberal Michael Hirsh, in the liberal newsweekly Newsweek, so intolerant, close-minded, simplistic and bigoted?
Hirsh’s piece sounds the alarm over the fact that “Southernism” has taken over the “national dialogue” and has “transformed the sensibility of the country, . . .setting the agenda for our political, social and religious mores.” What alerted Hirsh to this “Southernization of our national politics” was a piece in The New York Times about the elimination from the American Idol television show of a contestant who in her last performance sang “Jesus Christ Superstar.” According to Hirsh, this song was once the symbol of the triumph of “the new and the openness to innovation” over “nativism and yahooism,” but now its performance cost the contestant a chance at the talent show finals because of its “blasphemy." Oh, please! This young woman, Kristy Lee Cook, sang “God Bless the USA” previously and stayed in the competition. She has a great chance of a career in country music. The showcase of American Idol even benefits the *losers*.
We began watching the show this season because we couldn’t stand watching the FNC news commentary shows on at the sme time. We do not vote. Young people, who are the market for new pop singers, do vote. People are sent home because they had the lowest number of votes, not no votes or negative votes. This show is a brilliant way for the music industry to find and market new singers while making a profit off the search process. That is all it is.
That said, I am a born and bred Northerner who appreciates the so-called Southern culture. I especially like the accent. Elitists do not. I have been told often, when I have said that I love the sound of a southern accent, that it sounds *uneducated*. I have no idea how these people manage to listen to Bubba or Snakehead, if they dislike the sound of southern speech.
Southerners reproduce themselves more often than Northeasterners or Midwesterners, more Americans move South than move North, and the South has received a large share of the new immigration to boot.
All this means is that they are impervious to logical argument that conflicts with their emotion based conclusions.
I grew up in Southern California and spent most of my life there. I now live in Texas. When I goto New York and they hear that I am from Texas they tell me, “Yoose guyz all talk soo fuooking retar’ed!”
Maybe going Southern is not so bad, yall! ;-)

I want to thank you for that. I had a bee in my bonnet about Norherner’s for a while even though I’m married to an Upstate NYer.
I’m an unashamed Southerner and lived in middle PA for a few months. Everywhere I went people acted like they couldn’t understand a word I said and my accent is very, very mild. They’d roll their eyes, then speak very loudly and slow as if I were the one with the comprehension problem.
I’m so tired of ‘unbigoted’ Lie-berals I could vomit!
We Southerners have long recognized that Southern-prejudice is accepted, that our intelligence is always in question, that a Southern accent immediately lowers the IQ at least fifteen points, that it is always open season on the South, and that the rest of the country often assumes that ALL Southern schools are abysmal.
I have been privy to insults directed at Southerners, even at the highest levels in the field of education, because I have no Southern accent. The guilty were shocked (but not embarrassed) to learn that I was born and reared in Alabama.
Once, in response to my contribution to a committee report, an administrator from New York chirped patronizingly, “Why, you just used an SAT word.” I refrained from countering with corrections of his grammar.
Such attitudes have given rise to an old joke among Southerners: Northerners are like hemorrhoids; the good ones go back up.

Back when the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was being unified I happened to be drinking with two liberals (one an avowed socialist actually). Both saw unification as the worst thing to happen since .... Genghis Kahn.Did I say liberals were mentally ill? Yep, okay.Almost on cue, both ranted that the first thing Germany would do was fire up the ovens again and kill all the Jews (I'm series'). And to stop this the UN and USA should declare war and destroy Germany and kill all Germans (feel the looooooove).

Oh yes...And we al,l know that Bi-coastal Big city warren, baby killing, death freak, flle the country plague rat votes, should count as five votes compared to any dumb yokel who isn’t smart enough, and “intellectual” enough, to be a drug abusing drunk, and little child sexualizing, dead ender sex freak, who wormed their way into a job in education or politics, government, or a union...or “entertainment”.

It takes a lotta balls or a lack of brains for people who talk like they should be recording with The Jerkey Boys to be saying that Texans talk 'stoopid'.
Well, one - the avowed Socialist is a Jew. He's also a H.S. History Teacher (now that's scary). But given how some Jews act he may hate Israel. The other lib was female, also a HS Teacher (Drama).
